Harold McBee Obituary

STEVENSVILLE, Ohio - Harold "Hal" Arthur McBee Sr. of Stevensville, MD passed away at Anne Arundel Medical Center in the city of Annapolis, MD, on the day of December 16, 2020 at the age of 75.
He was born the son of the late Charles Gordon McBee Sr. and Mary Lydon McBee on May 26, 1945 in Baltimore, MD.
Hal grew up in Pasadena with his seven siblings and graduated from Severna Park High School. He received a scholarship to play baseball and soccer for the University of Baltimore, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in accounting.
Hal married his wife of 53 years, Judith Haminger, on November 4, 1967, of whom he had known since the 4th grade.
A few years after graduating college and a brief stint as a Medicare auditor, Hal founded McBee Associates, Inc. in 1973. Working out of his house, he became a Medicare cost consultant to every hospital in the state of Maryland. He then further expanded his business to include areas of Virginia, Washington D.C., Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, and West Virginia. He eventually sold off half of McBee Associates to a couple of his employees in the late 1970s and started to branch out into other ventures within the healthcare industry.
Northeast Health Management, Inc. was founded with the purpose of purchasing and managing small rural hospitals. This company purchased its first rural hospital, Potomac Valley Hospital in Keyser, WV, in 1981. His company went on to acquire five more rural hospitals and two hospital-based nursing facilities in the states of Wisconsin, Kentucky, Texas and West Virginia. He also started up and oversaw other healthcare related entities. These companies were Health claims Processing, Inc.; Midstate Medical, Inc.; Medical Leasing, Inc. and H&S Realty Inc.
The full ride athletic scholarship he received paid his way through college. Understanding this, Hal decided to set up his own scholarship to help aspiring students in the towns his hospitals resided in. The scholarship was named in honor of his parents, Charles Gordon and Mary McBee, the fund was given to three deserving area students each year. Over a span of 15 years the fund gave scholarships to 50 deserving students.
In 1969, Hal and his wife Judy, had their first child, Harold "Hal" McBee Jr. In 1971, they had a daughter, Stacy McBee (Cha). His family lived in Cape St. Claire for 20 years where he was heavily engaged in the local youth sports program where he is credited for starting up the Cape St. Claire youth soccer program that is still thriving to this day.
Through his love of helping kids, he coached youth soccer and baseball for over 20 years and tried his hand at coaching his daughter in lacrosse (even though he barely knew anything about the sport). He coached the J.V. women's soccer team at Broadneck High School for a couple years and coached high school baseball summer league for a few years with his old High School coach Dr. Wirth.
Hal and Judy moved to a small farm on Kent Island in 1990 where they have lived until this day. He had the privilege to be able to coach every one of his grandchildren in soccer for the Kent Island Youth Soccer League. An avid golfer, he was often found at Prospect Bay Country Club where he spent most of his free time playing golf with family and friends. One of his biggest joys was to be able help his grandson Holden pursue the game, helping him to become a fantastic high school golfer with hopes of playing in college someday.
Some of his greatest joys were spending time with his siblings, children, grandchildren, and extended family during family reunions hosted at his house. Hal loved watching his granddaughter "Laney" perform in theater and singing programs, watching his grandson Cameron's soccer games, and watching his grandson Holden compete in golf. He adored his grandson Royan, who he would spend many days a week walking and just playing with. He loved all his grandkids dearly and was the best possible Grandfather anyone could possibly ask for.
Hal is preceded in death by his mother Mary, father Gordon Sr. along with brothers Austin and Alan. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 yrs. Judy McBee; son Harold McBee, Jr; Hal Jr's wife Yvonne McBee; daughter Stacy McBee Cha and her husband Tae Cha; his grandchildren, Delaney, Cameron, Holden, and Royan, and brothers and sisters Charles Gordon McBee Jr., Mary (Peggy) Wojciechowski, Jerome McBee, Anita Owens, Michael McBee, sister-in-law Linda Cantler and many nieces and nephews.
A private family service will be held & Webcasted December 29, 2020 at 2PM and a Celebration of Hal's Life will be held at a later date when the current pandemic is more under control. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, that tax deductible memorial contributions can be made to the Washington College Athey Athletics booster club https://www.washingtoncollegesports.com/athey_athletics_club/index

I have known Hal for over 40 years. I have been the family and corporate CPA during this time. There has not been a week that has passed when we didn't chat about employee issues, banking, the IRS and his family. In all of Hal's dealings with the five hospitals he owned, McBee Associates, Northeast Health Management and Midstate Medical he always put what was best for his employees and his family before what was most financially lucrative for him. He will be truly missed.
