Florence Alberta "Floss" Thornton

Alberta Thornton CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Florence "Floss" Alberta Thornton, of Chestertown, died Monday, Feb. 13, 2012, at the Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chestertown, Md. She was 94. "Floss" Thornton was born Oct. 12, 1917, in Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of the late Carroll Webster Steel and Carrie Florence "Zercher." Mrs. Thornton attended West Philadelphia High School and graduated in 1936 from Modrenelle Cosmotology College as a beautician. She opened Floss Beauty Shop in 1943 at 68th and SW Philadelphia street. She was married to Jack Ragan for 25 years, he preceded her in death. She moved to their summer home in Still Pond Creek and then moved back to Glenolden, Pa., in 1965. She later married John Thornton in 1979, he also preceded her in death. She permanently moving to Chestertown, Md., in 2004. She enjoyed dancing, bingo, sewing, socializing, her friends and her family. She was a member of the Holmas Presbyterian Church in Holmas, Pa., Chestertown Landing, Golden Girls, Amy Lynn Ferris Center and the Sudlersville Senior Center. She is survived by one daughter, Paricia Schauber of Sudlersville, Md.; one son, Robert Ragan of Salem, S.C.; six grandchildren, William "Chip" Campbell Jr. of Betterton, Md., Elizabeth Ragan of Salisbury, Md., Mark Campbell of Chestertown, Md., Glen Campbell of Queens, N.Y., Greg Campbell of Harlem, N.Y., Amy Star of Church Hill, Md.; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Services will be held Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, at 6 p.m., at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Rd., Chestertown, Md. Friends may call one hour prior. Burial will be private.
