ANN HENDRIE Obituary
HENDRIE, ANN CHASE Ann Chase Hendrie, 88, of Little Compton, RI and Mystic, CT, died peacefully at home on October 24, 2015. All her children, and her oldest granddaughter, were at her side. Born Ann Martin Chase in Waterbury, CT, on November 4, 1926, she was the oldest child of Florence Martin Chase and Rodney Chase of Watertown, CT, where she was raised. She attended the Madeira School and Bryn Mawr College, majoring in Art History. She was married first to Charles P. Twichell of New Haven, CT, and Keene Valley, NY, and had three daughters. She was subsequently married to Robert F. Hendrie of Bernardsville, NJ and Little Compton, RI, who died in 1997. Mrs. Hendrie was a great reader, cook, gardener, and philanthropist. She was active for many years with the New Haven Garden Club and Historical Society, as well as numerous educational institutions, including the Foote School in New Haven, where she served on the board and parent-teacher association. She joined the workforce at midlife as a bookseller at the Foundry Bookstore in New Haven. She was a generous donor to many causes, including Planned Parenthood, Emily’s List, Habitat for Humanity, and Chase Collegiate, Madeira, Bryn Mawr, and the Foote School. A lifelong lover of the arts, music and performance, she supported the Boston Symphony, Yale Repertory Company, and Long Wharf Theater. She travelled widely, and especially loved Italy and the British Isles. She spent time later in her life in San Francisco, CA, where her three brothers lived. She is survived by her daughters, Chase Twichell of Keene, NY and Miami Beach, FL, Eliza Twichell of Keene Valley, NY and Santa Fe, NM, and Cary Twichell of Providence, RI, as well as her brother, John Chase of San Raphael, CA. She also leaves four grandchildren, Andrus and Jack Nichols, and David and Lucy Kasofsky; four stepchildren, John, Daniel and Richard Hendrie and Brooks Widdoes; her sons-in-law, Russell Banks and David Parr; and many beloved nephews, nieces, and friends. Donations in her memory will be gratefully accepted by the Madeira School, 8328 Georgetown Pike, McLean, VA, 22102. A memorial service will be held in Little Compton, RI at a later date.
