Anthony Giordano Obituary

Giordano, Anthony V.
Anthony Vincent Giordano, died Oct. 11, 2017; born July 10, 1930 in New Haven, to Anthony and Theresa (Vastola) Giordano. He grew up in the "Hill" section, a proud graduate of Hillhouse H.S., Class of 1948. Upon graduating from Clarkson College of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1953, he received a teaching and research fellowship from the University of Connecticut, which led to a Master's of Science in Engineering from UConn in 1955. Known as "Tony G", he had a passion for bridges and early in his career worked for the world renowned structural engineering firm D.B. Steinman helping to design the original Quinnipiac River Bridge and Mackinac Straits Bridge. He then became President of Harbor Construction, before opening his own private practice in 1961 as a professional engineer and continued working every day until his passing. During this time he also served as Vice President of Servidone Construction in Castleton, NY. Tony met and married the love of his life, Julie DeLouise, who became his partner through every journey in life. He loved to plan trips for them, both abroad and in the U.S., making wonderful memories and new friends wherever they went. Tony and Julie would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary next month. Tony's proudest moment was when his son David, was born. He instilled a belief of working hard and living life to the fullest, and would support his son during early morning hockey practices and traveled to every baseball game to cheer him on. He built an amazing life for his wife and son, filled with travel, culture and a passion for learning. Tony was involved with and supported many professional and civic organizations, including the Amity Club, Sons of Italy Lodge 37, National Italian-American Foundation, St. Andrew the Apostle Society receiving the Humanitarian Award in 1989, Center for Disability in West Haven and served as President of Wilsonian Club and the Connecticut Society of Professional Engineers. He was very proud of his Italian heritage, and could often be found reading Italian history and cookbooks and reciting facts about the life of St. Anthony of Padua. He was also actively involved in many local sports organizations including West Haven Little League, Babe Ruth and Youth Hockey. His granddaughters, Gabriella and Francesca, who referred to him as "Poppy," were his greatest blessings and his eyes lit up when he was with them. He would often share stories of growing up in New Haven as well as many life lessons. Most of all, Tony will be remembered for his quick wit, stories and zest for life. He will be greatly missed by all. In addition to his wife, son and daughter-in-law, David and Adria, and granddaughters, Tony leaves behind his brother- and sister-in-law, Edward and Marion DeLouise; sister-in-law Louise Leopold; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends.
