Charles Grimshaw Obituary

Charles W. Grimshaw
Charles "Grimmy" William Grimshaw, age 90, of Milford, beloved husband of Kendall Carroll Grimshaw for over 50 years and devoted father to Allison Moreira (Paulo), entered into peaceful rest on Tuesday, January 23, 2024. Charlie was born in Staten Island, New York, on January 16, 1934 to the late Charles and Louise (McElhone) Grimshaw.
Charlie lived in Staten Island for many years before moving to Connecticut and was a proud US Air Force Veteran who served during the Korean War. He worked at Bethlehem Steel for many years as a computer supervisor before retiring in 1994. He loved to golf at the Orchards in Milford and was a past member of Grassy Hill Country Club in Orange.
Grimmy, as he was known to the dozens of girl softball players he coached over the years, spent many hours on the ball field. He loved the game of softball and enjoyed coaching various teams; from his unbeaten Sparkle Lite Milford Recreation team through many state championships with the Milford travel team. He also served as an assistant coach at Lauralton Hall under head coach, Tom McDonald, with whom he remained best of friends with over the years, as well as his wife, Joan. Together, they won two state CIAC softball championships. Charlie loved coaching his daughter, Allison, and spent countless hours practicing with her in the backyard.
Paulo was more than a son-in-law to Charlie, he was a son. He loved Paul with all his heart and enjoyed all their times together, especially playing golf in 117 degree weather in Portugal!
In addition to softball, Charlie was an avid UCONN women's basketball fan, and he and Kendall attended many final four tournaments over the years. He also enjoyed spending time on the Jersey Shore.
A lover of all animals, Charlie especially loved the many dogs he had over his lifetime.
After his coaching years, he loved watching his two grandsons, Matthew and Ryan, play baseball, basketball and football. He went to as many games and tournaments as possible; witnessing Matthew's first homerun and Ryan's FLAGG football championship. He was very proud and deeply loved both of his boys.
Charlie's family would like to thank the wonderful people at Bridgeport Hospital for taking such good care of Charlie these past few weeks. We would especially like to thank the nurses in the surgical ICU. Your kindness and caring was amazing. He truly cared for all of you. Strawberry ice cream is now a staple in our household!
Charlie is survived by his wife, Kendall Grimshaw of Milford, daughter, Allison Moreira (Paul) of Hamden, two grandsons, Matthew and Ryan Moreira, and brothers, William David Grimshaw and Steve Wax (Kim), both of TN.
Family and friends may call on Monday, January 29, 2024, from 4:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at THE GREGORY F. DOYLE FUNERAL HOME, 291 BRIDGEPORT AVENUE, MILFORD. Interment will be private. Kendall and family, you have my sincere condolences on your loss. I remember hearing stories from Kendall on our train rides to NYC.

I grew up on a farm in upstate ny and Charlie and his mom, aunt Louise would visit most summers.....they were always welcome with open arms, Charlie mainly for his wit and playmate fun,,,aunt Louise for her different hair colors every year and her great smile.
When I moved to Staten Island as a young person, they were both there, again with open arms.....aunt Louise and uncle Charlie fed me and Charlie introduced me to "stumpys" his corner bar....i still remember aunt Louise cooking thin pork chops and Charlie and I eating them all , fresh out of the fry pan
I always loved when Charlie was near, he had a way of showing that he cared about me, the feeling was always mutual...he will be missed.....

Charlie spent time on the Payst family farm during summers as a youngster then more recently at family reunions. Loved by us all as a playmate then as a story-teller extraordinaire. How wonderful to have had Charlie in our lives.
