Dorcas MacClintock Obituary

Dorcas MacClintock
Dorcas MacClintock of Hamden, CT, died at home on August 3rd, 2023, at the age of 91, in the care of her two daughters and Connecticut Hospice. She was the daughter of Helen K. and James T. Eason of Wilton, CT. A naturalist, writer, sculptor, Dorcas excelled at many things. Among the ten books she wrote, "A Natural History of Giraffes", a collaboration with her good friend, artist Ugo Mochi, was awarded the New York Academy of Sciences Children's Science Book Award. Her bronze sculptures of North American and African animals were included in art exhibits throughout the country.
Dorcas's love of animals extended to a house full of various creatures, ranging from dogs and cats, to raccoons, flying squirrels, bushbabies, a kinkajou, a coati, an otter, a raven with a broken wing, a prairie dog and a beloved screech owl. Some of these animals were models for her sculptures as well as subjects for her books. Dorcas relished her time at Smith College, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1954. She went on to the University of Wyoming, where she earned a Master of Arts in Zoology in 1957. During that time she met her husband-to-be, geologist Copeland MacClintock.
Dorcas and her family lived in Hamden since the mid-1960s. She was a curatorial affiliate with Yale's Peabody Museum of Natural History, where her husband worked for over 50 years. Dorcas was a signature member of the Society of Animal Artists in New York City. She also gave lectures on animals in art at the British Art Center, Yale Art Gallery and elsewhere. Dorcas is listed in Marquis Who's Who, as a leader in the fields of biology and art.
Dorcas was full of life, right until her fall just weeks prior to her death. She is greatly missed by her daughters, her granddaughter and her many friends.

I was lucky to have had the pleasure of the whole MacClintock family as patients where I worked as a dental hygienist. Pam and Margaret were the best loved children by both parents. Dorcas MacClintock was a wonderful soul. She loved her family and all the animals that were family also. Don´t forget Rosemary Coony! There couldn´t have been a more delightful place to grow and thrive! May both parents rest in peace. Heaven has two of the best on our planet. I can only hope my kitty who just passed is in Dorcas´s loving care. Gerri Giering. Your old hygienist
