George Hahn Obituary

HAHN, GEORGE E., DVM George E. Hahn, DVM, 81, of North Branford, CT, formerly Jeffersonville, NY, died peacefully at Yale New Haven Hospital on February 1st with his children by his side. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Barbara, daughter Lisa and her husband Jim Cantey of Madison, CT, son Kurt and his wife Karen of Damascus, MD, grandchildren Eric, Sarah, Bryan and Alexis and several nieces and nephews. George was born April 5th, 1932, in Callicoon Center, NY, on the family homestead his great-grandparents built after immigrating from Germany in the 1850’s. He was the son of Edward and Elizabeth Hahn. He was predeceased by his sisters Betty Baum and Louise Freer. As a child, he rode his horse Mickey to the one-room Weissmann district schoolhouse until the regionalization of Jeffersonville Central School. He graduated from the Cornell University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1956 and established the Jeffersonville Animal Hospital. George loved his community and always thought of others before himself. He served on the Sullivan County Parks and Recreation Commission, Jeffersonville-Youngsville Central School Board, Jeffersonville Lions Club, and JEMS (Jeffersonville Enhances Main Street), among others. He will be remembered for his quick dry wit, willingness to serve and compassionate care for animals. George and Barbara loved to travel, visiting all seven continents. His favorite trips were to Papua New Guinea and trekking gorillas in Africa. George and his family thank Thomas Duffy, MD, Sue Farone, RN and Mary Fuller, RN for their outstanding medical care and compassion enabling him to survive his battle with leukemia nineteen years ago. In addition, thanks go to the medical and nursing staff of 5-5 at Yale-New Haven Hospital during his final days. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to JEMS, Jeffersonville, NY, 12748, the Employee Appreciation Fund of Evergreen Woods, 88 Notch Hill Rd. North Branford, CT 06471, or Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Sullivan County-4H Education Programs, 64 Ferndale Loomis Road, Liberty, NY 12754. Following his wishes, there will be no formal funeral services. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Arrangements in care of the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church St, Guilford.
