Jack's passion for sports and community involvement was evident throughout his life. Beyond his sports involvement, Jack was deeply engaged in various community organizations. He served as chairman of the Amity Board of Education from 1983 to 1987 and was a member of the Orange Rotary Club, serving as president for a year, Paul Harris Fellow and a member of the Paul Harris Society. His leadership extended to the Town of Orange Police Commission, where he served as chairman until 2024. In recognition of his lifelong dedication to the community, he received the Town of Orange Living Treasure Award in 2010.
Jack was also a devoted churchgoer and lifetime parishioner of the Church of the Good Shepherd, where he served as a senior warden. His faith and commitment to his church community were central to his life, providing him with strength and solace.
Jack is survived by his two beloved sons: John M. Barton III and James Barton. He is also survived by his loving partner for the last twenty years, Ms. Lee Schlesinger. He is also beloved by his extended family of John's partner, Maura Harrigan, her daughters, G.G. and Ana, their husbands Derek and Jeff, Lee's daughter, Sarah Pollack, her husband Ross, and daughter, Marian, and Lee's son, Ian Schlesinger and his children, Coren and Eva. Terry Sullivan-Neighbor

May 29, 2024

I am offering my heartfelt condolences to the Family and Friends of Jack Barton. Jack was my neighbor on Orange Center Road for over twenty years and when my family first moved here he was the most accommodating and welcoming of neighbors. He was an absolute gentleman of upstanding character and moral fiber and his commitment to community was so evident. I will miss our front yard conversations. Always positive-always enjoyable. We will miss you Sir. May you rest in peace!
