John Daly Obituary

Daly, Reverend John Joseph
Reverend John Joseph Daly passed away on Friday, February 26, 2021 at the age of 91 after a brief illness. He was a resident of the Jerome Home in New Britain, CT at the time of his death. Fr. Daly was born on January 3, 1930 in Hartford, CT and was the son of the late John and Catherine (Kivney) Daly. His beloved sister, Mary Daly, also predeceased him.
Fr. Daly began his Catholic education at Immaculate Conception School in Hartford before entering Saint Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield. He would next complete philosophy and theology studies at Maryknoll Seminary in Lakewood, New Jersey, and Saint Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, Maryland. He was ordained to the priesthood by the Most Reverend Henry J. O'Brien at Saint Lawrence O'Toole Church in Hartford on May 15, 1958, as St. Joseph's Cathedral had been destroyed by fire on December 31, 1956, and was in the midst of being rebuilt. Fr. Daly's first assignment was as an assistant at Saint Bernard Church in Sharon. Additional early assignments included work as an assistant at Saint George Church in Guilford, Saint Patrick Church in Waterbury, Saint Francis Church in Naugatuck, Our Lady of Victory Church in West Haven, Saint Rita Church in Hamden, Saint Paul Church in Kensington, and Holy Spirit Church in Newington. He would next be named Co-Pastor and Administrator at Saint Barnabas Church in North Haven, where he would later be named Pastor Emeritus and would remain until his retirement in 2004. As much as possible throughout his retirement, Fr. Daly remained close to his colleagues, former parishioners and special friends with whom he created many happy memories. Of particular note are his close friends: Fr. Hugh MacDonald, Sr. Mary Anne Powers, CND and the Gaffney family. He was an avid reader and unwavering fan of the Boston Red Sox and Notre Dame football. Fr. Daly was very proud of his Irish heritage, loved to travel, and enjoyed dining out. Anchored by his deep faith in God, he always maintained a sense of humor and positive spirit. His giving heart was evident by his support of innumerable charities and causes near and dear to his heart. Of special note, is the tender love and care shown to him by his caregivers at the Jerome Home. Fr. Daly will live forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Most Reverend Leonard P. Blair, Archbishop of Hartford, in the Chapel of the Pastoral Center at St. Thomas Seminary, 467 Bloomfield Ave., Bloomfield on Saturday, March 6th at 11:00 a.m. Friends may pay their respects at a calling hour in the Chapel prior to the Funeral Mass beginning at 10:00 a.m. Fr. Daly will be laid to rest with his family in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery in Bloomfield, CT. Memorial donations may be made to Covenant House, Times Square Station, PO Box 731, New York, NY 10018-0900 (covenanthouse.org) or to a charity of the donor's choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to The Ahern Funeral Home in Hartford, CT, www.ahernfuneralhome.com.
