John Finkle Obituary

FINKLE, JOHN J. SR. John J. Finkle Sr. of St. Augustine, Florida, passed away surrounded by his family on March 10, 2011 at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florda after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Gretchen Hlubek Finkle. He was born in West Haven, CT on August 7, 1934, son of the late Mattison L. Finkle Sr. and Grace Davison Finkle. Mr. Finkle was a conductor for Amtrak before his retirement in 1997. He was a member of the UTU, Local #1672, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp, member of the American Legion, the Marine Corp League, and a parishioner of San Sebastian Catholic Church in St. Augustine, Florida. Survived by his wife, Gretchen of 44 years, his two sons, John J. (Cindy) Finkle, Jr. of Cheshire, CT, Keith M. (Denise) Finkle of North Haven, CT and three daughters, Andrea (Stephen Jr.) Lennon of Fernandina Beach, Florida, Erika (Craig) Johns of North Haven, CT and Gretchen (Jon) Gilliam of St. Augustine, Florida, twelve grandchildren, brother, Willard R. Finkle, Sr. of Guilford, CT and sister, Darriell F. Freer of Hamden, CT. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Mattison L. Finkle Jr. and sister Eleanor McMahon Sullivan. Mass of Christian Burial wil be celebrated on Thursday, March 17, 2011 at 10:00 am at the Church of the Ascension, 1040 Dunbar Hill Road in Hamden where he was a member before retiring to Florida. Burial in Beaverdale Memorial Park. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 16th 4 to 8 pm at Sisk Brothers Funeral Home, 3105 Whitney Ave. Hamden. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in John J. Finkle, Sr.'s name to the St. Vincent's Foundation, P.O. Box 41564, Jacksonville, Florida 32203. www.siskbrothers.com

I am truly sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Finkle. I always will have fond memories of spending many weekends at his house and him making the best french toast in the morning. He was truly loved and will be missed.

My condolences on Jack's passing. I rode his train many times going from NH to Fairfield Prep but remember him most fondly when my sister and I were growing up he was always around with my uncle Jimmy Reardon and I remember him quite fondly. Rest in Peace
