Kurt Hummel Obituary

Kurt O. Hummel
Kurt Hummel, age 86, of Madison Connecticut, passed away peacefully at his home following a brief illness on Wednesday, January 25th. Born on August 26, 1936, he was the son of the late Robert and Klare (Trefz) Hummel. Kurt is survived by his loving wife Alice, who he met while in college and was married to for almost 65 years. He leaves behind three children: Karen (Rick) Butler of Tuscaloosa, AL, Stephanni Hummel of Madison, CT and Eric (Susan) Hummel of Cheshire, CT. He was the proud Pop-Pop to eight grandchildren: Marin Sweeney, John (Ann) Butler, Christina Iovanne, Kurt Butler, Matthew (Brandi) Butler, Kathryn Hummel, Alec Iovanne and Samuel Hummel, plus eight (soon to be nine) great-grandchildren and his sister-in-law, Harriet Malamut. Kurt was predeceased by his sister Claire Busching of Sea Cliff, NY, his brother, Robert Hummel of Hamden, CT and his brothers-in-law, Alan Busching, Robert Holtz and Lawrence Malamut. Those who were fortunate to be members of his family loved and treasured the time they shared with him.
Kurt graduated from Hamden High School and attended Cheshire Academy for a Post-Graduate year. After attending Boston University, where he was a member of the Lambda Chi fraternity, he married his college sweetheart and returned to Connecticut to take his place in the family business, Hummel Brothers, Inc. where he served as Secretary-Treasurer until he retired as a co-owner in 2012.
Kurt was a longtime member of The Farms Country Club, where he loved playing golf with many of the friends he made during the more than 50 years he was a member. He especially enjoyed playing with a group of 30, known as "The Legends" and his Tuesday nights with the guys, playing cards. Everyone who knew Kurt thought of him as a "great guy" with a terrific sense of humor.
Kurt and Alice traveled extensively, enjoyed playing golf and bridge together, attending New Haven Chorale and New Haven Symphony concerts and socializing with their many dear friends. Kurt was a loyal Yankees and Giants fan, and especially enjoyed watching UConn Women's basketball games with his wife. He cherished his many pets over the years, most recently his Pekingese "Little Bit", who loved to play fetch with his daddy.
The family would like to extend its deepest thanks and gratitude to Jackie Cermona, who lovingly cared for him this past year; and the staff and nurses at Guilford/Yale New Haven Hospital VNA, especially Darlene, Mike and Donna for their care and kindness during Kurt's final days.
Visiting Hours will be held on Sunday, January 29th from 3:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at the Iovanne Funeral Home, Inc. 11 Wooster Place, New Haven, Connecticut 06511. A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, January 30th at 12:00 p.m.at The Farms Country Club, 180 Cheshire Road, Wallingford, CT 06492. Burial will be private.

I worked with Kurt at QUINNIPIAC Poll- a job I´m sure he did for fun! He was a joy to know for such a short time. He brought me a sub from the shop in Long Wharf when I did the late shift. I am so sad that he passed but so glad I knew him. RIP

Dear Mrs Hummel, Karen, Stephanni and Eric, I´m so sorry for your loss. I will always remember Kurt as a kind and loving man. Always with a smile and a bigger than life personality! I´m sure he will be deeply missed by family and friends. Unfortunately, I´ve been diagnosed with Covid, or I would have come to the funeral home tomorrow in person to pay my respects. Warmest personal regards,
Michael Belfonti

I played with Kurt in the Legends golf events numerous times. He was always a gentleman, he was always gracious and apologetic for any inconvenience he had while playing. He will be missed, and we know he will waiting in that great grill room in heaven waiting for the Legends teams to be formed.
