Martin Mador Obituary

Martin Mador
June 21, 2023
Martin Lawrence Mador, long-time environmental activist, died June 21, 2023. Born in September 1949 in Ohio to Shirley and Irving Mador, Martin moved to Connecticut to attend Yale University. He started his career as an organizer for the ACLU, then created the computer system for Yale University Medical School. He guided students in the Odyssey of the Mind Program. Martin decided to switch careers by attending Yale School of Environmental Studies and focusing on water conservation. He was a long-time paddler, clean water activist and president of Quinnipiac River Watershed Association and River Advocates of South Central Connecticut. He served on the Town of Hamden Conservation Commission and lobbied for the Connecticut Chapter of Sierra Club, as well as creating the Sierra questionnaire for deciding candidate endorsements.
Martin is survived by his daughter, Ariana Mador Purtell and her husband Jeffrey Purtell and many friends in conservation. Family and friends can honor his lifetime commitment to environmental causes with a donation to the Sierra Club, or the Friends of the New Haven Dog Shelter Organization, where he met his best friend and companion, Rachxy.

I and Marty were officers of Yale Aviation in the 1980's, and spent numerous hours flying all over New England, and raising money for the club by sponsoring overseas trips to Russia, Scandinavia, and Eastern Europe. Marty was a good friend, witty and super-intelligent. I will miss him. My condolences to his daughter and family.

Some of us will remember Marty as a superb flutist at Walnut Hill High School. Hat's off forever for your perfect picolo on "Stars & Stripes".

Marty was my best friend growing up in Cincinnati. I tried googling him, hoping to get in touch after a long time. I found this; not exactly what I was hoping for.
Needless to say, I knew Irv, Shirley, and his brother Alan, who died a while ago.
Nobody mentioned his piano playing. While we were in Cincinnati he was an enthusiastic pianist.
Allow me to extend condolences to all who remain.

Sierra Club is indebted and grateful for Marty's decades of tireless advocacy. Marty led our Legislative and Political Committees for many years and submitted testimony at the state legislature on about 500 bills. For many Sierra Club leaders, Marty was the first person they met that got them involved. He inspired so many people to be advocates and activists. In 2010 he received a national award at the national Sierra Club convention in San Francisco. He is remembered for his dedication to environmental advocacy and his sense of humor. He will be missed, but not forgotten.

I remember Marty leading some great paddling trips on the Quinnipiac and West River for New Haven youth where he showed first-timers not just how to paddle but how to really respect the river... and him cruising around in his little Mazda Miata. He taught me so much about how to be an effective lobbyist and advocate for environmental causes. RIP, friend

My deepest condolences to Marty's closest friends and family. He was a mentor and a friend. Very few people in this world who could match his passion or his wit! He will certainly be missed. Rest In Peace, Martin

Marty was an ardent environmental activist who, among other things, was instrumental in helping prevent the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from being exploited for oil and gas development.

With much of his effort involved with being a legislative liaison for the CT Chapter Sierra Club, Marty also collaborated with many other CT environmental organizations such as the CT Association of Conservation and Inland Wetlands Commissions.

In 2001 he published CELEBRATING CONNECTICUT CONSERVATION COMMISSIONS, Inspiration and Guidance for Local Action. It was published to celebrate Conservation Commission accomplishments, promote their purpose, and inspire further efforts.

Marty was truly a devoted environmentalist and I will miss his energy.

My sincere condolences to his family.
