Just heard of Merle's passing. I knew her many years ago when she worked her part time job at the VA hospital. I remember her shining personality and large laugh. Hope she remembers the fun trip to the ballet in NYC where we saw La Scala Ballet. PS to Merle... please say hello to your friend and my cousin, Alan, who passed last year.

I was so sad to learn of Ms. Stevens' passing. I can say without a doubt her Masterpieces of Literature classes were the most difficult and rewarding courses I took at West Haven High School. I will say that I learned to truly analyze a piece of literature, learned the art of writing an essay all while being introduced to great works of literature. I will never forget the books - Edith Hamilton's Mythologies, The Odyssey, Lysistrata, Canterbury Tales, Lysistrata, Macbeth, Dante's Inferno and on. I dedicated myself to this class because of her passion as a teacher. I got straight A's that year in her class - no easy feat especially since she was known to have one of the toughest academic standards in the school. She stirred a passion for literature in me that carried me through college, and through life. I will always remember her fondly, and with the deepest appreciation and respect.

Sincere condolences to the family of Merle Stevens. I had the honor and pleasure of taking Ms Stevens Masterpieces class during my junior year. Her passion, enthusiasm and humor inspired a great appreciation of the classics. I can honestly say she was one of the best teachers at WHHS. She will be greatly missed.

Merle was my colleague, my department head, my friend, but most of all, she was a proud Westie. She was the one who changed the English curriculum at the high school , which we enthusiastically embraced for years. She helped me score my Cross Country meets and became an avid jogger herself.
I will always remember her wit, her humor, her strength, her compassion, her dedication, and her passion for the English language and its authors and how the exposure to these are important tools in the education of all teenagers.

Merle was a great teacher, she had passion and patience to mold young minds. She could make you laugh and teach you something at the same time.
Because no matter who you were it mattered to Merle; it mattered a lot And, for Merle it mattered every day. She brought out the best in all of us with all of her energy and never let us down
She inspired us with her energy, wit, creativity and patience. She made us challenge ourselves and each other.
She made us into better students and even better people as we grew older
God Bless You Merle, Give You Back More You’re Bright Smiles and Keep You Safe in His Arms
