Michael Cox Obituary

Michael Cox
October 12, 1953 - May 7, 2024
Michael J. Cox, 70, of East Haven, passed away on May 7, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was born October 12, 1953 in New Haven to the late Elwood "Babe" Cox and Joan (Toohey) Cox. Michael is survived by his mother, Joan, and six of his siblings: Patricia Cox of East Haven, Elaine Thomas of Torrance CA, Joan Lucas of East Haven, Ellen Clements (Robert) of Villas, NJ, Frances Arsenault (widow of Ricky Arsenault) and Maureen Monaghan (Michael) of Guilford. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: Bazin Girma, Enderyas Girma, Megan Lucas, Richard Sgrignari (Mike), Lauren Clements, Maggie Kaelble (Sean), Sean Monaghan and Kelsey (Dave) Gorski; five great-nieces and nephews, Shiloh Girma, Patrick Harrison, Bradley Harrison, Liam Harrison and Parker Kaelble. He was predeceased by his father, Elwood, and his brother, Thomas S. Cox.
Michael worked for many years for US Steel in New Haven until it's closing and then went on to become a Longshoreman for New Haven Terminal until his retirement. Michael loved betting on the horses, there was no time like springtime when Mountaineer Race Track opened for the season. He enjoyed spending time with friends, going crabbing and generously shared his catch with many people. He also enjoyed his trips to New Jersey to see his friends, Louie and Mary, and spending a few days in Atlantic City. There wasn't a day that went by without him putting a straight $10.00 bet on his 4 digit number. There hasn't been an old western movie or TV series that he hasn't watched at least 10 times. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
Family will receive friends at the Clancy-Palumbo Funeral Home (Clancy Funeral Home), 43 Kirkham Ave., East Haven, on Saturday, May 11, 2024, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., at which time his funeral procession will leave for an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Pio of Pietrelcina Parish at the Church of St. Vincent de Paul, 80 Taylor Ave., East Haven, with Committal to follow at St. Agnes Cemetery, Branford.
Donations may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105 in memory of Michael Cox.

I just heard that one of our nicest classmates from the EAST HAVEN HIGH SCHOOL Class of 1971 has passed.
I am crestfallen as there wasn´t a nicer classmate or a nicer friend.
Mike had to be the "man of the house" before his time after his father Elwood and brother Tom passed. He was always working... whether it was US Steelbor The Terminal... he worked hard.
My uncle Dalt Brennan was very good friends with his father who he referred to as "Babe." He always spoke well of Mike´s Father and mother Joan.
The Cox family is a very close knit family and my heart goes out to all of you. My apologies for not attending as I did not know until an hour ago.
Your son/brother was the best and I... along with every member of our class remember Mike as a shy but congenial member of our class. He even came to my mother´s wake which meant a lot. That´s the kind of guy Mike was. He was shy but sincere.
We will all miss you Mike.

Mike you will be truly missed. We always enjoyed you staying with us and our fun trips to Atlantic City, gambling, the hot tubs and having delicious food and drinks. Heaven has gained another angel. We will always love you
