Robert R. Scussel Jr., 83, of East Haven, passed away on Sunday, May 23 at home. He was the beloved husband of 59 years to Caroline Monaco Scussel. Robert was born in New Haven on January 7, 1938, and grew up in Guilford, the son of the late Robert R. Scussel Sr. and Dorothy Bristol Scussel. Robert was a proud member of the United States Marine Corps as a part of their reconnaissance force. His experiences of jumping out of Sikorsky Helicopters into the Atlantic Ocean was chronicled in the New Haven Register. He was a member of Carpenter's Local Union 43. He worked for many construction companies as a foreman on highway and bridge job sites throughout Connecticut and New York. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Pompeii Church where he volunteered for the carnival and as a CCD teacher for many years. He was a longtime coach and commissioner for the Foxon Recreation League, and a coach for St. Vincent's and St. Mary's baseball and basketball. His greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren, always attending all of their games and school activities. Robert was the loving father of Mark (Sharon) Scussel, Richard Scussel, Dawn (Michael) Vittorio, and Patricia Scussel, all of East Haven. He adored his grandchildren Benjamin (Taylor) Scussel, Amanda (Sam) Kantor, Mark (Nicole) Scussel Jr., Theresa (Christopher) Pizzorusso, Marissa Vittorio, and Michael Vittorio Jr., and his great-grandchildren Ava, Aurora, and Autumn Scussel, Elliot Kantor, and Giancarlo Pizzorusso. He is also survived by his sister Edythe Meronek of Guilford, and many nieces and nephews. Robert was predeceased by his sister Roberta Gemske.
Family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial FRIDAY MORNING at 11:00 in the St. Pio of Pietrelcina Parish at Our Lady of Pompeii Church. Interment with military honors will follow in All Saints Cemetery, North Haven. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Pio of Pietrelcina Parish, 355 Foxon Road, East Haven, CT 06513.
