Ruth Friedland Obituary

Friedland, Ruth
Ruth (Danziger) Friedland, 92, of Norton St., New Haven, devoted wife of the late Arthur Friedland, died at her home on April 13, 2018 with her daughters by her side. She was a daughter of the late Mendel and Bella (Chatzek) Danziger. Beloved mother of Mindy Leventhal (Mark) of Orange, Paula Panzarella (Frank) of New Haven. Dear sister of the late Muriel Berger. Cherished grandmother of Jason and Melissa Leventhal, and Seth Leventhal (and fiancee Dr. Margaret Furman). Treasured great-grandmother of Jamie and Jack Leventhal.
Born in Hamden, May 15, 1925, the family soon moved to West Haven. She was one of three speakers at her West Haven High School 1941 graduation.
Until her daughters were teenagers, she worked at home as a professional typist. She had the first model of the IBM electric typewriter, and made IBM redesign the automatic carriage return because the machine could not keep up with her typing (125 words a minute). She later worked as a bookkeeper and office manager in New Haven and West Haven for the next twenty-five years until she retired.
She and her husband Arthur had sixty wonderful years of marriage, and at his passing in 2004, she summoned her strength to go on "without her other half." She was blessed with her grandchildren, and enjoyed spending as much time as she could with them, reveling in all their successes.
She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved getting together with people. Especially after retiring, she used her office smarts for competitive games - Mah Jong, bridge, gin rummy and dominoes. In the past year, her great-grandchildren and Melissa played Mah Jong with her.
Since 2006, Ruth's daughter Paula and son-in-law Frank moved in with her, and in 2014 Frank's mother Elisabeth joined the family household. In the past two years Ruth had a number of health issues, and the entire family is grateful for the love and attention of her aides Judith Santiago and Margo Purple. There were many Red Hat luncheons Ruth was still able to enjoy because of them. Judith and Margo made it possible for Ruth to stay at her home well-cared for, entertained and loved.

Aunt Ruth will be very much missed by all who knew her and most especially her extended family. She always sent cards for every holiday and birthday...she never forgot a birthday. On my wedding day, she slipped into the bedroom where I was getting ready and hugged me and gave me something "old" to have when I walked down the aisle. She was always loving and kind to our children and a trip back up to Connecticut wouldn't be complete if they didn't get to see Uncle Arthur and Aunt Ruth. Our lives are all richer for having known and loved Aunt Ruth.

There are not enough words to express the depth of my sorrow over Ruthie's passing.
She was my American 'adopted second Mom',
and I will deeply miss our regular calls,
and Ruthie's never-ending stories about her
summers with my mom, and the other stories
about our family on both sides of the border.
Family meant everything to Ruthie, and I was forever amazed at the collection of photos she had from decades and decades ago. Ruthie will be missed, but her stories, her voice, her love, and her spirit will forever remain in my heart.
Rest in peace, Ruthie. As we said at the end of each call "I love you".

Sorry for your loss. Your Mom and Dad were good friends of my parents and they would come visit us several times a year. My folks really enjoyed their company. May she rest in peace.
