Samuel Jelley Obituary

Samuel Robert Jelley
Samuel Robert Jelley, 93, died peacefully in his Guilford home on January 3, 2024. The only child of Samuel Jelley and Magdalen Holweg Jelley, he grew up in Orange, New Jersey. Bob graduated from Orange (New Jersey) High School, and then Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth College where he received a master's degree from its Thayer School of Engineering. He attended Officer Candidate School and served in the Navy Civil Engineer Corps in Morocco at Port Lyautey, where he forged a number of lifelong friendships.
Back in the States, Bob lived for several years in NYC, working for the engineering firm Howard Needles designing entrance ramps for the DC beltway, and spent his winter weekends skiing with friends. On one fateful ski trip he met his future wife, Elizabeth (Betsy) Brown. They soon married and relocated to Cambridge so Bob could attend Harvard Law School. Upon graduation, he joined the law firm of Wiggin and Dana in New Haven, where he practiced law as he practiced life: with enthusiasm and bringing a unique way of looking at everything. He was a smart and interesting person, finding insightful and fresh approaches to complicated problems.
Bob and Betsy settled in Guilford in the spring of 1963, where they raised their three children. He was involved in the founding of the Guilford Land Conservation Trust and served on the boards of a variety of local organizations. They took advantage of the many cultural and outdoor activities that Guilford offers, taking painting lessons with the local artist Madeleine Sharrer Poland, swimming at Jacob's Beach, hiking in the West Woods. Bob was a lover of food and an ardent cook. One year he made 52 different English Puddings in 52 weeks.
He loved New York City, maintaining an apartment there for over twenty years, where Bob and Betsy attended the Metropolitan Opera, saw dance performances, went to gallery openings and attended museum exhibitions as well as supporting avantgarde theater. Bob and Betsy traveled extensively in Europe. Deep into their eighties they hiked in Switzerland or the French Pyrenees for a month each year. Bob had an inquisitive mind and a Renaissance approach to all he did - whether art, architecture or hanging pictures at Wiggin and Dana.
Robert is survived by family and friends including children Sarah (Jack Miller), William (Skip Barbour), and Peter (Jill), grandsons Samuel and Caleb, and step-granddaughters Megan and Sydney Dood. The family is enormously grateful to longtime caregivers Dolly Mwezeni and Susan Brookshire. Bob was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth.

Bob and Betsy got to know my wife Ginger and me both during and after my time at Wiggin & Dana. After retirement, we sat next to each other on Wiggin's library "atrium" . Perhaps our common background in engineering provided the "glue".

During my 2010 installation as NYIPLA president at the Union League of Manhattan in 2010, Bob was there to provide the support needed. At the Guilford Yacht Club for Wiggin gatherings, he and Betsy provided additional support. RIP! Dale Carlson

To The Jelley Family

So sorry to hear of Bob's passing. I worked for Bob at Wiggin & Dana in the early 90s. He was such a gentlemen. A bright and pleasant man. May he rest peacefully!

Sarah, Will and Peter,
I was very sad to see that your dad passed away. Bob Jelley was one of the finest people I worked with at Wiggin & Dana. I was his receptionist for almost forty years. There was never a day that he didn't have a friendly hello or a kind word or two. He was such a nice man. You should all know the joy that came over him whenever you called the office or came in for a visit. He was just delighted. It was so nice to see. It was easy to see the love he had for all of you. Sarah, you were definitely "daddy's little girl". That is a very special gift. I am so happy for the wonderful memories I have of both Mr. & Mrs. Jelley. Two truly wonderful & kind people. Please know that my husband Tom and I will keep you all in our prayers. We are so sorry for your loss.

So many memories of wonderful times with our dear friends, Mr and Mrs J, just to happily reflect on a few: celebrating Quatorze Juillet in Maine; riding the 7 with our backpacked picnic to Billie Jean King for the US Open Qualifiers; going twice on the Bob Jelley-led hiking tour of the French Pyrenees; eating the lamb sausages, beef bourguignon, and sweetbreads at La Luncheonette, always drinking the Chateau de Chambert; attending scores of Met Operas together, including The Ring on May 4-9, 2009.

Thank you, Sarah, Will, and Peter, for sharing your simply marvelous father and mother with me, with all of us.

Love,
Leslie

Bob Jelley was a man of extraordinary grace and wisdom, a lawyer of unmatched insight and creativity, and a loyal friend and colleague. I had the distinct pleasure and good fortune to work with Bob, first as an Associate, then as a Partner, at Wiggin and Dana from 1977 through much of 1985. He supported my growth and development as a young lawyer by his example: think carefully what it is you wish to communicate; express such directly and effectively, whether in writing or orally. Prepare your witnesses for trial carefully and thoroughly. Bob was wise, gracious and funny. He knew precisely when to deploy each quality to maximum effect. He was a true Renaissance man, one of a very few! He shall be missed dearly. My condolences to his wonderful family.

Bob answering the phone in that uniquely New Jersey accent.... "HALLO!?"
He was a great friend, a fierce dinner table debater, and one of the kindest, sweetest men I have ever met.
