SHIRLEY MALONEY Obituary

MALONEY, SHIRLEY Shirley Maloney, 90, died on 11/11/2015 in Brunswick, Maine. She was born 10/14/1925 to Margarett Rolfe Englehart and George Christian Englehart in Branford, Connecticut. She will be remembered as a sweet and loving mother and wife who always supported her husband and children. Delicately feminine yet full of sass, her high school yearbook of 1943 declares her “Class Heartbreaker.” She loved the big bands - Glen Miller, Vaughn Monroe, Louis Armstrong - often skipping high school to hitch-hike with her girlfriends to New Haven or take a train to New York City to see them perform. After high school, she worked as a key-punch operator for the New Haven Railroad, where she met her husband, Arthur Donnelly Maloney. They married in 1950 and had two children - Steve and Judy. She and Art built their home with their own hands. She became a homemaker, known for her baking and delicious gourmet meals. The family built a cottage in South Kingstown, Rhode Island. She welcomed and fed everyone generously. An adventurer who was full of life, she visited all 50 states and many countries. A trip for the summer through the U.S. and Canada in a VW camper exemplified who she was and what she gave her family. She spoiled her grandchildren, Kelly and Hannah, attending every birthday party and recital that she could. Kelly remembers many amazing trips with her, including Key West, Disney World, and yearly visits to NYC to see the Rockettes. She holds Shirley’s sense of adventure, her silliness, her thoughtfulness, and her deep love and commitment to her friends and family dear. Hannah remembers too many fun trips to count, especially summers in PEI, as well as all the visits and flea markets explored during her college years in NYC. She’ll always remember her kindness and generosity. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Carol Hartlin, and her husband of sixty-three years, Arthur Maloney. She is survived by her children, Stephen of Branford, Judith of Brunswick, Maine; grandchildren, Hannah Parker-Maloney and Kelly Parker-Guilbert of Boston. Her son-in-law of many years, Paul Parker, of Bath, Maine, held a special place in her heart, as did honorary child Elizabeth Capasso Fink of Branford. The family will have a private memorial. A celebration of her life will occur in the Spring in Guilford, CT where her cremated remains will be interred at Alder Brook Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: The Southwest Indian Foundation, 100 West Coal Avenue, Gallup, New Mexico 87301 or Short Beach Union Church, Pentecost Lane, Short Beach, CT 06405.

Steve and Judy,
Sorry to hear of your mom's passing. Hard to believe she and my mom were friends since high school. I fondly remember all the visits, picnics and going to the beach at the "Cove". My thoughts and prayers are with you.
