Thomas Legenhausen Obituary

Thomas Raymond Legenhausen
Thomas Raymond Legenhausen could be defined by his love of family, education and music. Born in Queens, New York, he was the son of Carl and Marilyn Legenhausen. From an early age, it was clear that he had a keen intellect. Love of learning and music would be a theme throughout his life.
Tom is survived by his wife of 47 years, Millie Cintron Legenhausen, his children David Legenhausen (Meredith) and Sara Jeanne Livingston (Neill Sanford), brother Gary Legenhausen (Heidi), niece Flora DiMonda and nephew Ali Legenhausen. Tom and Millie met in 1974 as freshman at Cornell University, where they majored in history. They married on November 26, 1976 in New York City. Tom graduated from New York University School of Law in 1980 and began his career at Legal Aid Appellate Division. A position at Wiggin and Dana brought the family to New Haven in 1986. Tom would eventually move to practice law in the insurance industry, finishing out his career after 25 years at The Hartford. A diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and subsequent treatment made it necessary for him to retire earlier than he had anticipated from a job he truly enjoyed. He continued to be in touch with colleagues until very recently.
Tom was a teacher at heart. He loved the Law and enjoyed sharing his knowledge with younger lawyers at work. He had many interests, including reading about history and science, and playing music. At the end of the workday, he would unwind by playing banjo, fiddle and guitar. His major focus in life, however, was taking care of his family. It gave him great pleasure to see his children graduate college, marry wonderful people, and thrive. He also enjoyed travel and dining. Sharing a home cooked meal at the house with friends was one of his favorite activities.
Tom lived a life of gratitude. He often expressed how blessed he was, having a strong family and many devoted friends. He was a generous man, supporting organizations that work for the greater good. In lieu of flowers, he requested that donations be made to the Clifford Beers Child Guidance Clinic in New Haven, which has served children and their families in Connecticut for generations.
A funeral Mass will be held at Trinity Church on the Green in New Haven, on Thursday, December 7th at 11 a.m., with a reception following the service. Burial at Grove Street Cemetery will be private. The Havens Family North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue have been entrusted with the arrangements.www.northhavenfuneral.com

Dear Millie and Tom,
my condolences for you and Davie, and Sara,
You were two of the most in love young couple I have ever encountered, young parents and professionals I have had the honor to have spent time with. Now we are older, and I am very sorry for Tom's passing too soon. Very Truly, Mary Farrell

Millie, I am so sorry that Tom has passed. He was your soulmate.
I will never forget him fiddling in my home with Bill. His talent was effervescent and infectious and so very humble. There is never enough time. Much love to you my friend.

My strongest memory of Tom is from the many years that we were part of a gourmet group that met bi-monthly for some fabulous themed dinners. Tom was always a gentle, thoughtful and intelligent presence in these gatherings. He and Millie were so clearly devoted to each other, which was a pleasure to observe. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

I only met Tom and Millie once . My friend Bonnie brought me along to a dinner at their house a few years ago when I was visiting from Oregon. We had a lovely dinner and Tom and I immediately bonded over our love for performing bluegrass music. We had a wonderful visit. I am so sorry for family's loss...I know he will be sorely missed. Thank you Millie for a wonderful dinner and conversation.
It is a memory that I treasure....
