William Durand Obituary

DURAND, WILLIAM F. (RET. NHPD) William F. Durand, 59, (retired NHPD), husband of Joanne Avitable Durand of East Haven, passed away suddenly March 14, 2014, at his home. Father of Kathleen Durand of East Haven. Son of Kathleen Martin Durand of East Haven and the late Reginald Durand. Brother of Thomas Durand and Donald Durand both of West Haven, Nancy Keyes of Killingworth and David Durand of Florida. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Bill was a loving husband, father and a devoted son. He worked as a New Haven Police Officer and retired after 25 years of service. He was a well-respected and dedicated officer who received numerous commendations during his years of service for going above and beyond the call of duty. He received special training by the National Auto Theft Bureau and Bomb and Explosives Recognition Training. He also worked on the Traffic Division and on the Harbor Patrol Unit. In addition to being an exemplary police officer, he was a multi-talented individual. Bill was accomplished in carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, and home repairs of any kind. Bill was always willing to offer his talents up to anyone who needed him. He appreciated antique cars and was a member of the Shoreline Time-Machines Car Club. His other hobbies included scuba diving, boating, quilting, stain glass, rappelling, and wood working. His funeral procession will leave the PORTO FUNERAL HOME, 234 Foxon Rd. (Rte 80) East Haven Wednesday morning at 9:00. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Our Lady of Pompeii Church at 9:30. Interment will be private. Friends may call TUESDAY from 4:00-8:00 PM. Memorial Contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Assn., P.O. Joanne My thoughts and prayers go out you and your family. I worked with Bill in the Auto Theft Task Force and have seen you and Bill at "Crusier Nites" at Savin Rock. Because of an recent injury, I could not make Tuesday, but my thoughts were with you.
