Wilson Bacon Obituary

Wilson "Bill" Bacon
06/20/2023
Wilson (Bill) J. Bacon, 68, of St. Thomas, USVI and New Haven, CT, passed away on Tuesday, June 20, 2023 after a brief illness. Bill was born on January 19, 1955 in New Haven, CT to the late Thomas and Ann (Winn) Bacon and grew up in North Haven, CT.
Bill proudly served in the United States Navy as a corpsman and a diver, traveling the world. He continued on to graduate from the SUNY Maritime College in New York, NY and then returned to New Haven, CT, so his children could grow up surrounded by family.
He had a successful engineering career and spent his free time hiking and sailing with friends and family. After overcoming many health challenges, Bill flourished in retirement when he moved to St. Thomas. He enjoyed snorkeling around the island, taking classes towards a Marine Biology degree at the University of the Virgin Islands, and participating in the yacht club activities near his condo.
He is survived by his brother John Bacon and his wife Carol of Deer Isle, ME, his former wife Leslie Wallace of North Haven, CT, his two sons, Scott Bacon and Neil Bacon of San Diego, CA, his daughter Julie (Bacon) Shuman and her husband Zachary of West Hartford, CT, and his grandson Blake Shuman.
In lieu of flowers, we request any donations be made to the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands ( https://www.cfvi.net ) in his honor.

I sailed with Bill on the Statsraad Lehmkuhl in 1972-73. He was a great shipmate and we kept in touch sparingly in the years since. If anyone from Bill's family would like to see pictures from his adventure with the Oceanics School, we have a website with many pictures. www.Oceanics72-73.com.

What an amazing resilient man Bill was. We knew him first as a fellow parent at an alternative magnet elementary school in New Haven., 25 years ago. He was always pitching in and brought such a friendly upbeat positive perspective to the table. Bill was someone who was present and available to talk and to lend a hand. He knew how to make a difference.
When cancer was diagnosed and treated...when life changed course in unanticipated ways....Bill marched on, sailed on to new possibilities. He seemed to embrace music and the sea. He started a new chapter.
My hat is off to this resilient man. He showed us a way.

Blessings, love and comfort to his family...especially Julie, Scott and Neil.

To the friends and family of Bill Bacon-
I wanted to share just a few of the things I will always remember about Bill...
I loved to snorkel with Bill...he was a real "frogman", not only in the Navy, but in the waters of the Virgin Islands too. He was one of a very few people I have snorkeled with who could descend to the depth he could, for the amount of time he was able to stay under water. It was remarkable! I the water, Bill had no physical limitations!
He was also a great sailor. Bill and I shared a Hobie Wave in the annual St, Thomas International Regatta one year. He´d sail in the morning; I´d sail in the afternoon. I don´t recall that we won anything, but we sure had fun. Bill was also a dependable crew aboard our sailboats Odyssey and Blue SKie, always ready to take the wheel when he was needed.
My wife Peggy and I offer our heartfelt condolences to Bill´s family and friends for our mutual loss.

A loss of a very dear friend indeed. Bill and I snorkeled every nook and cranny of cowpet bay and took so many picture with our Olympus tough cameras that we ran out of storage.I will miss his gentle approach to life on the Island that he loved so much. Rest in Peace ,my friend

My condolences on the passing of Bill. I went to Oceanics school with him in the 1972-73, school year. We had a lot of good times, and I too, like Bill became a life long sailor. Fair wild my friend.
