Jan Sherbin Obituary

Jan Sherbin

Cincinnati - Local author and entrepreneur Jan Sherbin of Hamilton County passed unexpectedly Sept. 26.

Jan recently published "Hip, Hippo, Hooray for Fiona!" a children's book about Cincinnati's famous hippopotamus. She won multiple prizes for other children's stories.

Jan also scripted and produced the award-winning documentary "Cincinnati to Kharkiv, People to People" that illustrates how Cincinnatians have helped their sister city for nearly 30 years.

A freelance columnist, she often commented on post-Soviet history.

Jan partnered with husband Alexander (Sasha) Etlin to create Glasnost Communications, a public relations and intercultural communications company.

It was on a trip to Kharkiv that she met her husband, who interpreted for the group.

Besides her husband, Jan leaves behind sisters Roberta Corman (Stewart) and Karin Sherbin. Parents Leonard and Charlotte Sherbin preceded her in passing.

Donations in Jan's memory can be sent to the Cincinnati-Kharkiv Sister City Project (CKSCP) at Carew Tower Suite 3620; 441 Vine Street;

Jan was my friend since first grade and remained so over time and distance. I can hardly believe she is gone. Sasha, I am so, so sorry for your loss. May her memory be a blessing always.

As a fellow member of the Board of Trustees of the Center for Economic Initiatives, Inc., I was accustomed to seeing and working with Jan (and her husband, Sasha) for many years. It is difficult to come to terms with the loss of someone who we see regularly, and who seems so healthy and spirited.

I am deeply saddened at the passing of my colleague Jan. We had known each other for over 30 years, having met first through her work on the Kharkov Sister City Project when I was working in communications with the Public Library. She was a talented professional and a wonderful person. She will be greatly missed.

Dear Sasha, a bright light has gone out of your life. And also for those who also knew and loved her,i I will always remember and miss her slow, drawled, "Hello Suzanne" greeting when I called. She had such a positive outlook on life, and she freely shared from her vast store of knowledge .I really appreciated her assistance to Kirk (Polking) and keeping me informed. I hope they had a great reunion. The world is smaller without her, Suzanne
