Roland Owens Obituary

Owens

It is with great sadness that the family of Roland "Wayne" Owens announces his passing after a brief illness, on Friday, August 4, 2017, at the age of 78 years. Wayne was born October 12, 1938 to Earl Owens of Smithtown and Opal Rose Owens of Greenwood (both deceased). After the untimely death of his father, Wayne was raised by his mother and step father, Newman "Newt" Clark (deceased). Wayne is survived by his sister, Sheila Brennan (John), and brothers, Earl Owens, Jr. (Georgia) and GC Clark (Louise), as well as his loving companion of recent years, Mary Sexton. Although he had no biological children, Wayne loved his nieces and nephews as his own. They, along with other relatives young and old, will remember him as a loving and giving soul. He also will be fondly remembered by numerous friends and acquaintances whose lives he touched. Wayne was known by all to be a generous, kind, and caring man. People were drawn to his heart, passion for life, intelligence, and sense of humor..

Wayne was a native of Greenwood, Kentucky, a place he always returned to and the place he considered home. From an early age, Wayne was passionate about education and lifelong learning and never let his difficulties with communicating stop him from pursuing his dreams and aspirations. His drive and commitment were admired by all who knew him. After graduating from Berea College, he went on to attend several graduate programs where he earned multiple advanced degrees. He worked in the fields of chemistry and computer science throughout his adult life. After retirement, he returned to McCreary County to be near the people and land he loved. Many individuals and groups benefited from his generosity and community service throughout his life, but especially in recent years after his return to Greenwood.

At Wayne's request, after cremation, no formal services will be held. Those wishing to pay condolences and share memories are welcome to do so at the interment of his ashes on September 2 at 4:00 p.m. at the Greenwood Cemetery. Donations in memoriam can be made to Berea College's scholarship fund. Wayne always credited Berea with giving him an excellent foundation for the rest of his life and he would be pleased that his friends and family support such a wonderful institution.
