Alfred Wiedemann Obituary

WIEDEMANN Dr. Alfred G. Wiedemann, Jr., passed away on February 8, 2012, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 82. He is survived by his wife, Janet Longmire Wiedemann, his brother Lawrence Dupuy Wiedemann, his children Alfred George Wiedemann, III (Carol), Valerie Wiedemann Goyeneche (Rafe), Michael Alan Wiedemann (Beth), Lawrence Rocquet Wiedemann (Patrick), and Katherine Wiedemann Hebert (Louis). He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren, Nicholas Paul Goyeneche, Brannon Elizabeth Wiedemann, Natalie Regan Goyeneche, Kyle Michael Wiedemann, Ryan Louis Hebert, Alexandra Ann Wiedemann, Holly Nicole Hebert, Ross Patrick Wiedemann, Trent Matthew Wiedemann, Rebecca Ann Wiedemann, Emily Jane Hebert, and Blake Andrew Hebert. A memorial service was held on Saturday, February 11th at Saint Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Slidell, LA. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society. A lifelong native of New Orleans, Louisiana, Dr. Wiedemann graduated from Jesuit High School in 1946, where he was a three-sport letterman in baseball, basketball, and track. He was a member of Jesuit's 1946 baseball team that won the American Legion World Series. He attended Loyola University on a baseball scholarship, graduated in 1950, and then pursued a medical career after turning down an offer to play baseball with a New York Yankees farm club. Following graduation from LSU medical school in 1954, Dr. Wiedemann accepted a service position for residency in Fort Defiance, Arizona on the Navajo Indian Reservation for two years. He returned to New Orleans and practiced obstetrics and gynecology in the Metro area until December 2011, helping to bring thousands of babies into the world and helping patients throughout his career. The Eternal Optimist, "Dr. Al," as he was known, enjoyed many hobbies and sports, but by far his love was the game of golf. Starting at the age of 70, he began shooting below his age and this continued into his eighties. He led a "wonderful, beautiful life." More than anything, he loved his wife, his children and grandchildren, and was an exemplary husband and father.

My prayers are with all of the Wiedemann family. Dr Al was a great doctor with the greatest and most caring personality. I remember seeing him the first time, how nervous I was and he made it all ok. I was 18 then and at 53 he is still my number 1 doctor and always will be. I am very happy I just saw him in December. He will be sadly missed. May God rest his soul and may he rest in peace. To a man that had special talents. He delivered all my kids starting in the early 80's. And every year when I went for my regular check ups he made me feel like I was part of his family. He spoke of his wife and kids. And always asked about mine. Since he knew I had a ball players. He meant the world to me and my family. I had an operation in late oct and he did it with Dr. Michael. Thank ya'll The Wiedemann Family for sharing his love of being a Doctor with us all so long. We spoke of him retiring...hahaha He did not want that. He said he loved coming to work. I will sincerely miss him for awhile. What a lovely, smiley man. Rest in peace my friend. Missy and Glenn Bourgeois

Dr. Wiedemann delivered me as a resident at Baptist Hospital. I saw him in November for the last time. He had just performed 2 surgeries on me in July. He was one of the kindest men I will ever know. While a parishoner at St. Louis King of France I would see him and his wife. I always said a prayer for them. They always looked beautiful, kind, and caring. Dr. Alfred Wiedemann was a wonderful man and an excellent doctor. He recommended a few books for me to read that he enjoyed since I am a professional librarian and we use to talk about the library business. He gave me a hope and understanding I feel no one else could. My daughter was also a patient of his also. I recommended so many to him who became his patient because I intrinsicly trusted him.
God bless you and yours, Prayers and condolences to all his family, and friends.

To all of the Wiedemann, I am so sorry for your loss. What a Dr. and man, we all loved him so. Whenever I came in for a visit, we always talked about golf and his love for the game so last year when I had the opportunity, I set an appointment, we talked awhile and as I was leaving, I was able to give him tickets to the Zurich Classic. He was so excited. That will be my last memory and it was an amazing gift to him but also to me...

I am so sorry for your loss. He was a greatest doctor I have ever known, always had "answers" not "educated guesses" concerning my health. I often called him for referrals to other specialists I needed as he only recommned the best! I have been seeing him since 1980, even after my move to Gonzales and will have a hard time finding another that can fill his shoes. Always cheerful and so full of life, hard to accept he has left us. I will keep you in my prayers.

All who knew Dr. Al were blessed. He was a special guardian angel to so many families. Anyone who knew Dr. Al knew how much his family meant to him. He often talked of his love of his family when he spoke to his patients. He was so proud of his children and mentioned them many times. 44 years is a long time to be a patient. It was amazing how many people I personally knew who all were Dr. Al's patients. We would often talk about how much we loved him as a doctor. We will all miss him so. God Bless!

February 15, 2012

Dr. Al saved my sons life in 1988, he had a "funny feeling" and decided to do a C section. The cord was wrapped around my sons neck twice and without the C section he would have died. I loved Dr. Al and trusted him with my life and the life of my unborn children. In 1994 I had a problem with anxiety which threw me into a serious depression I was a complete mess I will never forget the concerned look on his face when he saw I had lost so much weight and was so unhappy and scared, that weekend he called me from the golf course to see how I was and to make sure I was alright. I feel like I lost a friend, a father and the best Dr. I have ever known. I have been saying prayers for Dr. Al and his family and will continue to do so. Rest in peace Dr. AL I will always appreciate and remember what you meant and have done for me.

Office visits always included news about his family and interest in mine.
My heart goes out to his wonderful family and I want you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers, as is he.

Even though I didn't see my Uncle Al very much, (due to geographical distance) I always loved and appreciated him. My parents have kept me informed of your family news and filled me in on their visits with you. I know how much my parents Bob(Uncle Bozo) and Gayle just adored Al.
I remember visiting you all at your home when I was young, and having a great time! And then seeing most of you at various family events, weddings, etc.
I always thought of Uncle Al as such a kind hearted and devoted man, equally devoted to his family and to his medical profession. He was also so warm, intelligent and had a great sense of humor and love of life.
I know how much he will be missed by you all and I am so sorry for your loss.

One anecdote that always come to my mind about Al is very silly. When I was very young, we played this family game (that maybe came from your family?) where we would reverse the order of the letters of our names and pronounce them (backwards). It was decided that by far the funniest name was pronounced "Der-fla Nam-e-dew" which of course was Alfred Wiedemann pronouced backwards.
Anyway, forwards, backwards or upside down... he was a great man who lived an exemplary life. The world was blessed to have had him this long. May he rest in peace with the Lord above. We will all miss him.

All my love , Elizabeth Gayle Longmire (Liz) in Nans Les Pins, France

Dr Al did so much for me in the 30 years that I had been his patient. He brought me through surgeries, miscarriages and appeared on his day off to deliver my baby, I'll never forget him for that. He had that "old school" way of practicing medicine that will be missed.

My deepest sympathy to Al's family. I had the pleasure of sitting next to Al at the last Jesuit reunion. We shared a great love of sports. Doc Perrier

To the Wiedemann family:

I was deeply saddened to hear of your loss. Dr. Wiedemann has been my physician for 43 years. I felt I could talk to him about anything. Words seem inadequate to express the sadness I feel so I will just end in saying my heart goes out to your family and you will be in my prayers. Sincerely, Brenda Cooke

Alfred Is In A Much Better World Today Than This One.

There, He Is Free From All The Pain, Suffering And The Agony He Alone Quietly Endured While Here.

Upon His Arrival, There Will Be A Grand Celebration By All Who Have Preceded Him

We Should All Pray For The Repose Of His Immortal Soul.

May God Bless His Family, And God Bless Alfred G Weidemann, Jr,

Dr Wiedemann was my physician for about 45 years. He was interested and inquired about my family , my husband and children , on each visit. He always asked about the children he delivered and always spoke about his wife and children. He was so proud of those kids. The last time I spoke with him, he was visiting his wife in the ICU at East Jefferson, and I was visiting my husband there. He was a great doctor and a wonderful person. MY prayers are with his family.

Signed
A patient who felt she could always talk to her doctor about anything.
