Allen Gamble Obituary

Allen Bush Gamble of Charlotte, NC, the son of Jane Leach King and the late Bush Louis Gamble, died on January 13, 2018. He was 61 years old. A native of New Orleans, Allen graduated from Isidore Newman School and Louisiana State University. It was at LSU that Allen met the great love of his life, Eloise, he and "Oise" were married in 1982. Allen worked in the oil and gas business in Louisiana but following many booms and busts he moved to Charlotte in 1987. He worked in real estate before building a successful wealth advisory business at Rockworth Financial. While Allen had a Charlotte address, friends knew him as a diplomat from New Orleans sent here to teach us the Cajun way of slowing down and enjoying the moment. He used a variety of methods – the annual crawfish boil, LSU football updates and entertaining stories (often repeated) about his many lifelong friends growing up in the Crescent City. Mostly he showed by example. Allen and Eloise's house was ground zero for holidays and family events with Allen manning the grill, mixing an occasional cocktail and surveying the chaos. There was no such thing as a fast meal, quick round of golf or brief conversation with Allen. He cared about people and truly wanted to know how you were doing – "fine" never cut it. For Allen, multitasking had a time and a place, but could never replace the live human interaction on which he thrived. Allen was always available for a friendly chat, easy laugh or slap on the back. Allen loved the outdoors. He was never happier when he was hunting with his boys, catching redfish with friends or captaining the pontoon boat on Lake Summit. Allen was very proud of his three children for making their own way by following their passions and found tremendous joy in watching his nieces and nephews grow into exceptional young adults. Besides his wife and mother, Allen is survived by his stepfather Rivers Richardson King, both of New Orleans; a daughter, Grace Harlan Gamble of Boulder, Colorado; two sons, Neilson Jacobs Gamble of Charlotte and Thomas Allen Gamble of Los Angeles; an aunt, Katherine Leach Creed of Hendersonville, NC; an aunt, E.J. Gamble of Montoursville, PA; a sister, Katherine Gamble Walkley (Philip) of New Orleans; a brother, Timothy Brian Gamble (Tracy); and a stepsister, Peggy King Bruce (Robert). He also leaves behind an extended family including his mother-in-law Toinette Jacobs, Toinette and Joe Wilkinson, Scott and Dianna Jacobs and Frances Smith, all of Charlotte, and Emmie and Michael Cook of Richmond, Va., and Mary Jacobs of Baltimore. Allen was dearly loved by his numerous nieces and nephews, Katharine Quinby Scrantom, Margaret Garland Scrantom, William Gamble Scrantom, Allison Morgan Gamble, Cameron Bush Gamble, Emily Katharine Gamble, Rivers Bruce, Rachel Bruce, Sloan Wilkinson Smith, Arden Elizabeth Rucho, Joseph Marion Wilkinson IV, Neilson Smith Jacobs, Brandon Scott Stanley, William Ford Chumley, Carter Wyche Chumley, Harlan Andrew Chumley, Erin Jacobs Smith. The family had a private memorial ceremony in Charlotte and the funeral service for Allen will be held on Saturday, January 20th at Trinity Episcopal Church in New Orleans. Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 12:45 pm, with the service at 1:00 pm, followed by a celebration of his life at the Trinity Parish House. The family asks that all who knew and loved Allen consider a donation to Habitat for Humanity, or the charity of your choice.

I hadn't seen Allen for many years and just found out that he died. I am so sorry to hear that. He was always a delightful person and I know he will be missed. My condolences to all of his family and friends

February 4, 2018

I met Mr. Gamble while I was working at the Charlotte Country Club one night while I was waiting on the bus. He along with lovely wife stopped by and insisted on giving me a ride to wherever I needed to go. I explained to them it may be out of their way since I was headed to South-end to meet my son who had my car. He insisted it was no bother and took me to Big Ben's where my friend and son's band were playing live music that evening. I will always treasure that evening because it made me feel good that people like Mr. Gamble was still out there giving proof to the notion that angels do walk amongst us. He will be greatly missed by the many people whose lives I am certain he touched. Praying for the Lord's comforting grace for the family. The genuine love and concern he had for others will remain with me always.
Sincerely
Jay R. Ewing

Dear Eloise and the entire family,
It was with shock and sadness that my wife and I learned of Allen's passing. Twenty-six years ago I retained him as my financial planner, but it didn't take long to regard him as a friend and confidant. His ready smile, affable good humor, and genuine concern for his clients was unwavering. So was his professionalism and loyalty. He will be sorely missed by us -- we can only imagine the heartbreaking loss you all must feel. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Eloise,
My wife, Tilly, and I could not be more upset for and with you and your family. We have been client/friends of his for over twenty years and always looked forward to his visits. He spoke with great pride of you and your children and we could tell that the Gamble family had a special relationship! I also enjoyed our pick on each other times as well as talking about duck hunting and fishing! We loved Allen and all of you though we only knew you through him. To say that he will be sorely missed is such an understatement. Please don't hesitate to ask if we can help you or yours on any way!

Unfortunately I have not seen Allen as much as I would have liked since he moved from New Orleans many years ago. I know how much he loved his family and how much he was loved. It was great to see Allen, Eloise and his children last year when they were all in New Orleans for Allen's surprise 60th birthday party at the NOLTC. I do remiss not seeing him enough through the years, but have great memories of our childhood, playing in Pop's basement and swimming in Cameron's pool, which I will cherish forever. My deepest sympathies to Jane, Eloise, Grace, Neilson, and Thomas. Allen will be truly missed.

Dear Eloise, I am so sorry to hear about Allen's passing. He was always a sweet guy and lovely person. We were sweethearts in 4th and 5th grade. He, Jack, Connie, and myself used to double-date! So we go way backalways fine memories. There's nothing helpful I can say - death is about feelings and memories. I wish you and your family resolve and peace of mind as soon as possible. Bring forward those good memories and hang on to those. All my love to you and the family. Sincerely, Vicki Heymann

Eloise and family, please accept my deepest condolences. I cannot imagine what you must be going through at a time like this.

I've known Allen since kindergarten, and he was the type of bright, congenial soul who made lifelong friends wherever he went. Beloved for an especially disarming smile, infectious laugh and sense of humor, he was in equal measure a very successful entrepreneur. Above all he had a big heart, as good and open and golden as they come.

Rest in peace, old friend!
