Allie Verlander Obituary

Allie Avice Wyler Verlander was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on June 25, 1928, one of the identical twin daughters of Albert Glese Wyler and Geraldine Greve Wyler. She attended Sophie Newcomb College at Tulane University, where she met David E. Verlander, Jr., after his return to complete college after serving in the Army in the South Pacific. They fell in love and wanted to get married, but Allie's father had conditions - she must first finish college, and she could not marry before turning twenty. Allie finished her degree in mathematics at Newcomb in the late spring of 1948. On June 25, 1948, she turned twenty years old. On June 26, 1948, she and David Verlander were married. They remained hopelessly devoted to one another for 74 years until he preceded her in death in September of 2022, and her devotion to him continued even thereafter. They had six children, all of whom survive them: David E. Verlander III (Julie), Glese Ann Verlander, Jill Verlander Reed (Kenny), Peter Charles Verlander (Wendy), Paul Jeffrey Verlander (Monique), and Margaret Anne Verlander Vanchiere (John). Allie is also survived by her twenty-one grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. She was a wonderful Creole cook, a talented seamstress, a careful manager, and above all a truly extraordinary, devoted, and much-beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother for all of her days. She was the anchor for her large family. She was active in the Newcomb College Alumni, the Friends of City Park, and St. Clement of Rome Church, and was a patron of the Audubon Zoo and the New Orleans Aquarium. She died at her home in Metairie on March 25, 2023. She will be interred at Greenwood Cemetery beside her husband. She will be missed in her person, but her memory (and many of her recipes) will live on vividly in the hearts of all of her family. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to Friends of City Park (especially to Storyland), to the Newcomb College Alumni Association, or for masses in her memory at St. Clement of Rome. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church, 317 Richland Ave., Metairie, on Thursday, April 27, 2023, starting at 10:00 a.m., followed by a Memorial Mass at 12:00 noon. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family invites you to share your thoughts, fond memories, and condolences online, at www.greenwoodfh.com.
