Alphonse Schmitt Obituary

Alphonse Joseph Schmitt, III 'Jay' 'A.J.' Jay Schmitt passed away unexpectedly on Sunday January 29, 2023. He was born on May 16, 1953 and was 69 years old. Jay was a native of New Orleans and lived in Covington, LA in recent years. He was a lifelong sailor, owning several boats and competing in races over the years at the Southern Yacht Club and beyond. He particularly enjoyed spending time on his new sailboat "Cypress". Jay will be remembered as a kind and gentle person who firmly believed in eating dessert first. He was loved and will be missed by his family. Jay graduated from Isidore Newman School, where he was a member of the football team, Tulane University, where he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and The University of Tulsa College of Law. He was an avid piano/keyboard player and in his younger years performed frequently with a band. He loved the mountains of North Carolina and attended Camp Mondamin for several summers. Professionally, Jay practiced law for most of his life and he especially enjoyed practicing with his father for many years. Jay is survived by his partner Linda Ball Dolese. He is also survived by his siblings, Stephen Nolan Schmitt, Christopher Magee Schmitt and Suzanne Schmitt Brown (Michael), his nieces Margaret Brown Geddes (Giles) and Mary Nolan Brown and his nephew, Michael James Brown, Jr. Jay will be missed by Linda's children Lauren Dolese (Brandon Talley) and Erin Humphries (Travis) and grandchildren Logan, Bria, Carys, Kiersten, Avery and Ross. He was predeceased by his parents, Alphonse Joseph Schmitt, Jr. and Betty Magee Schmitt and his older sister Pamela Ann Schmitt. A private, graveside service was held on Friday February 3 at Metairie Cemetery.

AJ aka "Capt Jay" was my good friend, fellow Tulanian and sailing mentor. On one adventure, we chartered a 42 foot Yacht, July 4th out of Ft Lauderdale heading out to Bimini - When the Jib blew out in rough seas , Jay did not panic and got us safely back to harbor. We cruised the inter coastal and made frozen daiquiris and enjoyed `bird watching´ on sunny Florida shores. Jamie "DrB" Connelly

I am saddened to learn of Jay´s passing. We lived next door on Rosa Park growing up. Many family gatherings I will always cherish. May he R.I.P.

Jay was such a good, kind soul who loved to laugh and to sail. He taught me to play booray while simultaneously taking a buncha money off me lol. I like to think of him sailing with St Peter now.

I remember Jay as such a kind, gentle man who would get tickled over silly jokes and who loved sailing. He's sailing with St Peter now, God bless him!

I met Jay when I was a Deke pledge many years ago and he immediately took me under his wing to teach me a few things about beer drinking, sailing, crawfishing and having fun in general. He was a real character and left me with some great memories. My condolences to his family and loved ones.

Please accept my sincere condolences.
Jay was a good buddy in grammar school, high school and college. We had some wild times together and I considered him a close friend. I'm sorry we lost track of each other in our adulthood.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
