Alvin Duvernay Obituary

DUVERNAY Alvin Ernest Duvernay, Jr. passed away on Wednesday, May 8 2013. He was born in Central City New Orleans to Alvin and Ethel Duvernay on September 14, 1920, and spent most of his life in New Orleans and Metairie. The beloved husband of the late Betty Rose Barcena Duvernay, he is survived by three children: Charlene Ann Wynn, Alvin Ernest DuVernay, III and Betty Rose Ross; three grandchildren: Jeff Wynn, Erica Nagy and Taylor Ross; and two great grandchildren: Jackson and Austin Wynn. He enlisted in the US Navy after the Pearl Harbor attack and is a veteran of WWII where he flew SB2C Helldivers off of the USS Yorktown CV-10 aircraft carrier in the Pacific. Alvin worked for "the phone company" for 43 years and also maintained a thriving professional photography business in order to amply provide for his family. Alvin was an avid outdoorsman and his name is still in the record books for some offshore species. He had a passion for music and was quite the dancer. He and Betty turned heads and drew applause when on the dance floor swinging to a big band. His love of life was infectious and he was happiest when surrounded by family and friends. BBQ's were typical gatherings and ice cream was mandatory. Alvin will be sorely missed and his enduring spirit will live on in the hearts and minds of all who knew and loved him. In accordance with him and his family's wishes, there will be private gatherings to celebrate his life. Any donation to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org) will be appreciated. I am sorry to learn of your loss. I was a bridesmaid in his wedding to Betty Rose. Betty Rose was a dear friend of mine when we were in high school but we lost contact after our marriages. I remember that he and Betty Rose were a good looking couple.

Al was a testdeskman and worked in the basement of 1807 Burdette Street when I worked in the uptown area. I was always glad to hear his voice and knew I had competent help.
