Andrew Hoffmann Obituary

HOFFMANN Andrew Harold Hoffmann, Jr., M.D., 79, a native and resident of Thibodaux, La., died Tuesday, May 18, 2010 after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joan Schwarzenbach Hoffmann; three sons, Dr. Andrew H. Hoffmann, III and wife Susan of Thibodaux, Jeffrey J. Hoffmann and wife Karen, of Baton Rouge, Eric P. Hoffmann of Baton Rouge; two daughters, Lisa H. Waguespack and husband Herman, Jr., of Thibodaux, Jill H. Andrus and husband Daryl of Destrehan; two sisters, Sarah (Sally) Binnings and Patricia (Pat) Boquet, of Thibodaux; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Harold Hoffmann, Sr. and Bessie Foret Hoffmann of Thibodaux; and two siblings, sister Elizabeth (Betty) Bowie and brother Edward (Bill) Hoffmann. He was a 1947 graduate of Thibodaux College. He earned a B.S. from LSU, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity in 1951. In 1955, he earned his M.D. from LSU Medical School in New Orleans. He interned and completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Charity Hospital in New Orleans on the Independent Services. Dr. Hoffmann served his country as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed at Schilling AFB, Kansas and headed the OB-GYN unit there for two years. He returned to his hometown of Thibodaux in 1961 to practice OB-GYN at the invitation of Drs. Joseph Powell and Richard Morvant of Thibodaux Medical Group. They were joined in practice a year later by Dr. James Jackson. Upon completion of Thibodaux Medical Plaza, Dr. Hoffmann and Dr. Jackson were joined by Dr. Donald Crochet in forming the Women's Clinic. He was a past Chief of Staff at Thibodaux Regional Hospital and a Past-President of Lafourche Parish Medical Society. At the time of his retirement after 27 years of active practice in Thibodaux, it was determined that Dr. Hoffmann had lovingly brought into this world 6,510 new citizens for our community. Andy enjoyed traveling the world, and especially loved family gatherings and fishing with friends at Grand Isle. Visitation from 5:30 PM until 8:30 PM on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at Thibodaux Funeral Home (Thibodaux, LA) and from 8:00 AM until funeral time on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral (Thibodaux, LA). Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral (Thibodaux, LA). Interment: St. Joseph Cemetery (Thibodaux, LA). Landry's Funeral Home, Inc., Thibodaux, LA, in charge of arrangements.

Dear Eric and the Hoffmann family -- Sincere condolences to all of you on the loss of your father, with the assurances of my prayers that your happy memories of this fine gentle family man and physician will sustain you during this time of grief. It is not easy to lose a loved one, especially one who has done so much for so many. God's blessings to your father and his loving family!

I did not know Dr. Hoffmann personally; however, I know two of his children. Judging by them, he must have been something special.

My condolences to the Hoffmann family. Dr. Hoffmann was a wonderful doctor and a great person. He delivered my oldest son and retired during the middle of my second pregnancy. I still have fond memories of him from those important times in my life.I will keep you all in my prayers.
