Anthony Mumfrey Obituary

Anthony Frank "Buddy" Mumfrey Jr., PharmD., April 19, 1967 – October 18, 2022. Anthony Frank "Buddy" Mumfrey Jr., PharmD., died Tuesday, October 18, 2022, in his Beaumont, Texas home at the age of fifty-five years. Dr. Mumfrey was the son of the late Anthony Frank Mumfrey and Donna Phillips Mumfrey. He is survived by his mother, his only child, Phillip Charles Mumfrey and his older brother, John C. Mumfrey (Diane). "Buddy" was graduated from De La Salle High School in 1985. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New Orleans and Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Xavier University in 1997. Dr. Mumfrey was licensed as a Doctor of Pharmacy by the State of Louisiana in 1998 and was certified by the Texas Board of Pharmacy in 1997. He had resided in Beaumont, Texas since 2007. "Buddy's" Mumfrey ancestors arrived in Louisiana from the Island of Ustica in a part of the Mediterranean known as the Tyrrhenian Sea, due north of Sicily. The family name was originally Manfre but was later Anglicized to Mumfrey. Buddy's paternal Mumfrey grandfather opened Mumfrey's Sandwich Shop in the Central Business District of New Orleans. The restaurant remained in operation for over 100 years, serving generations of New Orleanians delicious poor boys and typical New Orleans food. His maternal great grandfather Francisco Miguel "Frank" Fernandez was born in Galicia, Spain and settled in St. Bernard Parish where he married Martha Guerra, a descendant of colonists from Spain's Canary Islands who founded St. Bernard Parish. "Buddy" inherited from all sides of his family an intense love of the water. He very thoroughly enjoyed fishing and duck hunting, not only gathering fish and game, but preparing it to perfection in his kitchen as well! He loved to cook in the Sicilian – Italian style and collected volume after volume documenting recipes. In fact, whether the topic was literary, culinary, scientific, historic or religious, "Buddy" had an enormous library which covered those topics and many others. He was instinctively curious and always sought out answers. "Buddy" was also fascinated by anything mechanical, delighting in constructing and reconstructing clocks and almost any type of mechanism. He was equally intrigued by mathematics. "Buddy" was devoutly religious, reading the Holy Bible daily. He delighted in reciting passages from the Bible and was guided by the Bible in all he undertook. His only child, Phillip, cared for his father during his final illness. "Buddy" was an individualist with a keen intellect who loved his family and home. He enjoyed the respect of many and leaves behind legions of friends in Louisiana and Texas. Family, friends, members of Los Isleños Heritage and Cultural Society and the Canary Islands Descendants Association are invited to attend the visitation, which will take place Oct. 29, at Greenwood Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Boulevard, New Orleans, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Religious services presided over by Pastor Peter Davidson, Lakeview Christian Center, will begin at 11:00 a.m. followed by interment in Greenwood Cemetery. I will really miss Buddy who was a family friend from way back, I´m sure of many. He was always so entertaining. He made me and my dad ("Pops") laugh like no others could. I can´t believe he´s gone so soon. Thank you Buddy for your friendship!
