Barrett Haik Obituary

Barrett George Haik, MD, FACS, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in his sleep at his boat house in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Friday, July 22, 2016. Dr. Haik was born in New Orleans on September 8, 1951, the son of George M. Haik, MD, and Isabelle Saloom Haik. He graduated from Metairie Park Country Day High School and Centenary College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Dr Haik earned his medical degree and his PhD in Anatomy from the Louisiana State University Medical School. After residency at New York's Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, Dr. Haik joined Cornell University and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. In 1986, he joined Tulane University in New Orleans as a professor of Ophthalmology. He was also made program director and medical director of the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital, where he trained residents from Tulane, LSU and the Ochsner Foundation. In 1991, Dr. Haik was named the George M. Haik, Sr., MD - St. Giles Foundation Professor of Pediatric and Adult Ophthalmic Oncology, Tulane's first endowed chair in Ophthalmology. In 1995, Dr. Haik was recruited to be Chairman of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center Department of Ophthalmology. Through his remarkable leadership, Dr. Haik transformed the Department of Ophthalmology from a small office with four academic faculty members into the acclaimed Hamilton Eye Institute, a world-class eye center that is home to more than 40 academic faculty members and lauded among the top ten eye programs in the United States. After 17 years as chairman, Dr. Haik took on the new role of director of the Hamilton Eye Institute. A prolific fundraiser, Dr. Haik raised more than $100 million dollars for the Hamilton Eye Institute and its programs. In addition to founding HEI, he also built the ophthalmic oncology service at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, saving the lives of children with ophthalmic tumors. Dr. Haik made tremendous strides in the fight against retinoblastoma, a pediatric eye cancer that once took the lives of 90% of children in developing nations who were afflicted with it. Through Dr. Haik's international outreach initiatives to establish centers of excellence throughout the developing world, that mortality rate is now under 10% in many countries. Dr. Haik was a member of numerous prestigious medical and scientific societies. He was past president of the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology, the American Eye Study Club, and the American Society of Ophthalmic Ultrasound; a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American College of Surgeons (for which he also served three consecutive three-year terms on the Board of Regents), and the New York Academy of Medicine; and a member of the American Ophthalmological Society. Dr. Haik authored or co-authored more than 160 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and abstracts. He was internationally renowned as an expert in the diagnosis and management of ophthalmic tumors and received numerous grants for his research. An accomplished and enlightening educator, Dr. Haik gave hundreds of presentations in both national and international forums. He received a Healthcare Heroes Lifetime Achievement Award from the Memphis Business Journal and a Life Achievement Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Haik's true passion was helping people. Semi annually he traveled to Panama to operate field clinics to help the poorest of poor. He felt that identifying retinoblastoma in children was paramount to saving their lives. He lectured around the world and traveled to the Middle East, Asia, and South America to teach physicians how to identify and treat pediatric ocular cancers. Dr. Haik served on the Board of the Eye Foundation of America, founded by his father and based in New Orleans. When not caring for patients or teaching others, Dr. Haik enjoyed the company of his friends and spent his spare time golfing, fishing in Venice or enjoying time with his bloodhound Maddie, who died just a few months ago. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. George M. Haik, Sr., and Isabelle Saloom Haik. He is survived by son Christopher Barrett Haik (Sofia) and Claire Marie Haik (James Anthony Schakleford). He is also survived by brother Dr. George M. Haik, Jr.; brother Dr. Kenneth Haik (Diana); and sister Suzanne Terrell (Lee); his close companion Blanca Phillips, her family as well as many other loving members of his extended family. He will be missed by his many patients, colleagues, students and friends throughout the world. Services will be held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 27 2016, with a visitation at 12:00 p.m. and service at 3:00 p.m. An event honoring and celebrating his life and accomplishments is also planned in Memphis, Tennessee, at a date and location to be determined. Dear Barrett and Claire,
I am so sorry to find out that your dad has passed away. I was your piano teacher in NYC when you were little and we had a wonderful time together. I remembered your dad was an amazing doctor and fitted me with a pair of contact lenses mumbling that they are foreign objects in the eyes. I had wanted to get back in touch but did not know-how. I hope you will see this listing and please be in touch. My phone number is (917) 922-8287, please call or text me! I hope you are both well and again, I am so sorry to find out about your dad's passing, one less great soul in the world.

Hard to imagine it has been five years - time flies - There are few physicians I have ever met that I respected as much as Barrett. The guy was truly an inspiration for everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Dear Haik family,
You know what an outstanding physician and gentlemen Barrett was. You know what a long list of lives and eyes he is directly responsible for saving. You may not know that he indirectly helped save many eyes by encouraging me, when I was a resident, to follow through on my idea for an ophthalmic anesthesia needle, in 1986. That invention is still being used worldwide. I was profoundly saddened to learn of the passing of such a great friend and mentor.

Dear Claire and Barrett - Your Dad was a dear friend and colleague. I so enjoyed our time on the faculty at Tulane together and having him help me on surgical cases. He was one of the people I missed most when I left to go practice in Natchez. We only saw each other a couple of times after and unfortunately our chances to catch up with each other were limited. He would do anything for me including helping me find a good doctor for my daughter ( also Claire) when she was in Memphis and needed hip surgery. I will miss him a lot and I will cherish my friendship with other members of the Haik family that Ihave come to know. God bless you all and hope that we get a chance to meet. Bianca, I miss you as well and wish you the best.

My late dad, Bob Ellsworth, was one of Barrett's mentors and always said that Barrett was one of the greatest doctors AND people that he had ever had the privilege to know. Barrett's extraordinary life and career proved the truth of those words. Barrett remained a loving and loyal friend to my brother and me long after my dad's passing, yet another testament to his endlessly generous heart. The angels will have trouble keeping order now that Barrett and Dr. Bob are reunited in heaven. Those of us left here will mourn his loss, but we also celebrate what a remarkable man he was,how he truly changed the world for so many, and how blessed we are to have had him in our lives. Our love and thoughts and prayers go out to Barrett's loving family --

It's with great sorrow that I learn of his passing. I am not certain I would have become an ophthalmologist if it were not for his influence 30 years ago. Whenever I think of him, I remember a moment when he reflected on his endeavors and told me he wished he could cure everyone of his patients. His heart was always in the right place. A true gentleman - he will be missed by everyone who had the pleasure to cross paths with him.

God, we love you, Dr. Haik. Dr. Haik helped my daughter Cory Katherine Hiers with her ocular melanoma. Sadly she didn't make it. I know she found Dr. Haik to give him a hug just as soon as he got to heaven. I'm so sorry for his family and their loss, but please know how kind he was to us and how safe we felt with him. God bless you all.

Barrett Haik was a rare combination of strength, tremendous intellect and unfailing kindness. I had the privilege of spending two months at Cornell Medical College under his tutelage while I was a medical student 30 years ago. That time remains one of the most remarkable academic experiences anyone could hope to have. Despite his accomplishments at such an early age, he treated all the students and residents as equals. It was a privilege and a great honor to know such a brilliant and gentle man. Barrett, may your beautiful star shine bright for eternity. You are loved by so many. Everyone who came in contact with Barrett recognized in him the outstanding attributes it took to be the consummate gentleman, highly gifted physician, surgeon and scientist that he was. Barrett's gift of compassion to his patients and his generosity to his students and colleagues was instrumental to so many young men and women who strove to be the best. He remained a good friend to all of us at Cornell and was instrumental in the early years helping to rebuild the Department of Ophthalmology, working alongside Bob Ellsworth, Cal Roberts, Fred Jakobiec to name a few. He will be missed by all. Our sincere condolences to the Haik family on the loss of this great man. ~ D. Jackson Coleman, MD

Dr. Haik did so much for me, helping me to truly carve out a career and life for myself and my family. He showed the same warmth and appreciation for janitors and plumbers as he did for professors and businessmen. He led not only by genius and vision, but by the day-to-day example set by how he treated others. Everyone always walked away from an encounter with Dr. Haik with a smile, feeling better than they did before, and carrying that positive vibe with them, passing it on to others. He was not only a great ophthalmologist, leader, and steward of philanthropy; he was a tremendous human being. The world could do with more people like Dr. Haik, for he was a rare and wonderful soul, and will be sorely missed. I will carry on his memory by trying to live by his example, treating all with kindness, warmth and respect, and never ceasing to believe that any vision can be achieved.

Our prayer are with your family. Dr. Haik was such a sweet person and a very good doctor.

Barrett was a true brother (KA). I stayed with him when I interviewed for medical at LSU. He was a L3 then. I got to meet his father. To this day I believe that may have influenced my becoming a physician. I will always remember Barrett for what he did for and the kind and loving and great person he was. I am not surprised at all of his great things he did. RIP brother.

There are no adequate words to express my personal sorrow and the sorrow of all Mid-South Lions members from our four-state area. Barrett was an incomparable friend, supporter to the extreme, dynamic in aiding us and in providing care to those in need. The Hamilton Eye Institute was a dream and vision until Dr. Haik came and was the driving force in making it a reality.

I cannot tell you how much he will be missed. My heart, my good thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family.

God bless you Barrett, and God bless the Haik family.

What a shock! I was at LSU School of Medicine from 1970-1978. I had the privilege of knowing Barrett's dad, George Sr., who was chair of Ophthalmology and had his office on same floor as I, a new Assistant Professor in Anatomy. He was a real southern gentleman and outstanding physician. I taught Barrett in Anatomy in the MD program and was involved in his graduate work with Dr. Marilyn Zimny for his PhD. What a catch for UT to attract him as the Chair of Ophthalmology. I still remember Bob Summit, Barrett and me with spouses dining at Paulette's during the recruitment visit. And how proud I was for Barrett to be a part of the senior leadership at UTHSC where I was from 1985-2007. Like his father, an outstanding physician and true gentleman. My thoughts and prayers go out to George Jr, Kenneth, Suzanne and Blanca. His patients, and colleagues admired and respected him and are saddened by his death at such an early age. RIP Barrett.
