Betty Maxine Van Kanegon

1934 - 2022

Maxine Van Kanegon has joined her late husband of 50 years, James Van Kanegon, and her identical twin sister, Maureen Files, in heavenly eternity after a long battle with severe dementia. Born July 22, 1934, in Halley, AR, Maxine passed peacefully in her sleep at Jefferson Health Care Center, on Monday, July 25th at age 88. She had lived in Metairie, LA for 56 years. She is preceded in death by her parents, Major and Lucy Minchew, and all 10 of her siblings. She is survived by her three children and their spouses: Jim Van Kanegon (Kim), Jon Van Kanegon (Ellen), and Liz Van Kanegon Gaiennie (Bill); six grandchildren, Jennifer Van Kanegon Frisard, James Van Kanegon, Lynnsey Van Kanegon Cox, Carly Van Kanegon, Kimberly Gaiennie, and Adrienne Gaiennie; and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her former daughter-in-law, Joy Van Kanegon, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Maxine loved entertaining family and friends in her home, whether it was a one-on-one over a cup of coffee or a TGIF free-for-all. Her kitchen was a place of celebration and sanctuary, and all were welcome. She worked as a sales counselor for many years selling cemetery property in Jefferson and Plaquemines Parishes, and developed lasting friendships through her work. The family would like to express gratitude to the staff of St. Catherine's Hospice for their support and compassion. Friends and family are invited to attend funeral services at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd. in Metairie, Louisiana on Tuesday, August 2, 2022. Visitation will be held from 11 am to 1 pm, followed by a funeral service in the chapel. Interment will immediately follow at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum, 5454 Pontchartrain Blvd, New Orleans, Louisiana.
