Charles DiCorte Obituary

Charles "Chuck" Joseph DiCorte, M.D., age 60, passed away on August 22, 2023. He is survived by his wife Helene; his daughter, Claire Marie DiCorte; and his sister, Beth Patricia DiCorte. He was preceded in death by his father, A. Charles DiCorte, and his mother, Patricia Hymes DiCorte. A native of New Orleans, Chuck graduated from Jesuit High School, where he lettered in football. He matriculated to LSU, where he proudly served as president of Delta Tau Delta fraternity and where he made lifelong memories and friendships. Pursuing his dream of a career in medicine, he earned his medical degree from LSU Medical School in New Orleans. He completed an internship in general surgery at Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham, AL, followed by a residency in general surgery at Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans, LA. He then completed fellowships in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery and heart and lung transplantation at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX. A member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, and board certified in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery, Dr. DiCorte practiced cardiothoracic surgery in St. Tammany and Tangipahoa parishes for almost 25 years, holding numerous appointments and receiving many honors during that time. Over the years with Ochsner Health Center Northshore, he served as section head and lead physician for the Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and served on their Outpatient Surgery Subcommittee. Additionally, he served on the Ochsner Alumni Association Board of Advisors for 17 consecutive years, during which time he served as Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, and Member at Large. During his time at North Oaks Medical Center, he served as Surgical Medical Director of Heart Health, Co-Director of the Surgical Intensive Critical Care Unit, and STS Database Committee Head; he also served on the Professional Practice Evaluation Committee, the Surgical Steering Committee, and the Bylaws and Credentials Committee. At St. Tammany Parish Hospital, he served on the Cancer Center Physician Advisory Council, CEO's Physician Advisory Council, was Chairman of the multidisciplinary lung team, and served as a member of the Credentials Committee. While on staff at Lakeview Regional Medical Center, he served as a Board of Trustees Representative, PPEC Chairman, Chief of Staff, Chairman of the Department of Surgery, and Surgical Care Improvement Project Champion. He was twice honored as a recipient of the Ochsner Spirit of Caring award, received the Ochsner Health Center Physician Leader of the Year award, was honored as Physician of the Year at North Oaks, and was recognized as one of New Orleans Magazine's Best Doctors from 2012-2022. Chuck loved his family dearly and enjoyed spending his free time with his wife and daughter. A gifted surgeon, he was known for his integrity, respected by his peers, and loved by all. He will be greatly missed by his loving family, friends, patients, and the entire Northshore community. Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for visitation at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 1501 W. Causeway Approach, Mandeville, LA, 70471, on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:30 p.m. Interment will follow at St. Lazarus of Bethany Memorial Garden. I got to know Chuck first through the Ochsner Alumni Association and local meetings. He was a warm hearted person, and friendly face in the community. He was honored today at the 70th Southern Thoracic Surgeons Association meeting and will be sorely missed.

I am so saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. DiCorte. In 2021 he repaired my mitral valve and while doing so found a hole in my heart (evidently from birth) which he also repaired. My surgery lasted 8+ hours mainly because of the hole which I apologized to him for afterwards, but grateful he found. I jokingly asked him later if he took a lunch break. He just laughed and smiled. Dr. DiCorte was a wonderful surgeon and I cannot thank him enough for taking care of me. He will always have a special place in my heart (literally his signature "Figure 8"). Please know my thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones. Romans 8:28

I meet Dr. Chuck many years ago at LSU undergrad in the early 1980s . I took several medical courses with him. He invited me as a guest for a South Seas event when he was chapter president. He was a great guy. I met up with him a few months ago at a grocery store in Covington. We had a great chat about the old days. I grieve for his family and friends during this difficult time. Bob

Helene and family, my deepest sympathies over the loss of Dr. DiCorte at such a young age. He seemed the picture of life when last we saw one another at an alumni function just two months ago. His patients will miss him immensely as well. He was a very accomplished cardiothoracic surgeon and was respectful and pleasant with patients, nurses, and physicians. He was a strong member of our alumni group. I will miss him. Best, Jefferson Kaye

Dr DiCorte was a special person; a genuinely good man and a great surgeon. I had the pleasure of working for him many years ago, and there was never a day where he didn´t have something pleasant to say, something to share about his beautiful family, or a moment to stop and ask about mine. I am saddened and shocked by this loss...the good ones truly do go too soon.

I pray his family finds peace during this time, and happy moments in the memories and words shared by others.

I hope he´s chatting it up with Dr Van Meter and those who left before him, listening to the Presidents of the United States, and smiling down on all those who shared in his life.

Dr. DiCorte replaced my artic valve in December of 2004. He was such a wonderful surgeon and more importantly a very wonderful man. I can still see that peaceful and glowing face whenever he walked into my room. I was in the hospital for 7 days and that radiance showed in him every time he walked into my room. We are so saddened by this great man's passing. Less than a year and a half ago, he saved my wife's life through nine hours of valve replacement and triple bypass surgery. During pre- and post-op visits, I'd noticed we both wore Rolex Submariners. He proudly told us how that watch was a gift from his parents. We chatted enthusiastically about family diving trips. He lit up at that conversation...you could easily tell how much his family meant to him. What an untimely loss.

Most sincere condolences to his family. I am most grateful for the extra 12 years with my father thanks to his skilled surgical hands. I will remember him as a healer and a gentleman. I bet he could have added Jeopardy Champ to his accolades! ( I remember him making ICU rounds when the show was on and he had all the correct answers.)

Dr. Dicorte was the most honest physicians I have ever encountered. I was sent to him by a pulmonologist in Hammond for lung surgery. He sent me to another lung specialists after telling me his opinion. I am so glad he was honest with me and refused a surgery I did not need. Great man Great personality. He will definitely be missed.
