Claude Daly Obituary

DALY Rev. Claude Raymond Daly, S.J., departed this life in the late evening of July 19, 2009 at Our Lady of Wisdom Health Care Center in New Orleans. A native of Austin, TX, Father Daly was born on June 18, 1916; he attended grade school and high school in Shreveport, LA, graduating from St. John's High School in 1930. On August 26, 1931, at the age of fifteen, he entered the Society of Jesus [the Jesuits] at St. Charles College in Grand Coteau, LA. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 22, 1943. Father Daly devoted most of his life to the work in Sri Lanka [formerly Ceylon], then a mission of the New Orleans Province of the Jesuits. He served in a variety of roles: teacher, high school administrator, pastor of several parishes, and-from 1980-1983-Provincial Superior of the Sri Lanka Province of the Jesuits. Ill health occasioned his return to the United State in 2003. Father Daly is preceded in death by his parents, Mark Raymond Daly and Mary Caroline Rietze, as well as by a brother, John Charles Daly. He is survived by his brothers, George Daly and Mark Daly, Jr., and by his sisters, Sr. Mary of St. Claude, RGS, Mrs. Mary Christine Jepson, Mrs. Madeline Frances Guillot, Miss Catherine Daly, and Mrs. Patricia Taylor, as well as by many loving relatives of younger generations. There will be visitation at 10 AM on Thursday, June 25, 2009, followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00. All services will be at the chapel of Our Lady of Wisdom, 5600 Gen DeGaulle Dr. in New Orleans. Interment will follow at the Jesuit Cemetery in Grand Coteau, LA. In recognition of and thanksgiving for the generous priestly service of Father Daly, donations are requested for the education of young Jesuits, for the care of elder Jesuits, or for the support of Jesuit ministry in the foreign lands. Donations may be sent to "The Jesuits"; 710 Baronne St. Ste. B; New Orleans, LA 70113. To sign and view the Family Guestbook, please visit www.lakelawnmetairie.com
