David Snow Obituary

Perhaps the world will little note the passing of David G. Snow of Virginia, Vermont and New Orleans. Sunrise February 24, 1933 – Sunset May 24, 2022, and whose existence on this planet spanned less than a finger-snap in the great scheme of things. He who harbored harmful malice toward none, and endeavored to go placidly amid the noise and haste of his times. But perhaps the absence of his ubiquitous presence at New Orleans musical events will be remarked upon by many. David is survived by his long-term partner Sadie Gentry, his son Cedric Winthrop Snow and wife Allison, and his grandsons Andrew and Leland Snow, and he will be missed tremendously by Calvin, Heidi, Lily, Raven and Axel Rice of New Orleans.

David was a treasured friend I was lucky to have known for decades. We sadly lost touch a while back; living in different states. He was a quiet, kind, brilliant soul who could answer any question; regardless of the subject. One of my friends who gathered us all together for games of Trivia Pursuit decades ago, reminded me how we would all say "Call David Snow" whenever there was anything we did not know in any situation. I remember many holidays and parties at him home when his musician friends would show up to jam. I know his family and friends will be comforted by their many loving memories and the knowledge that this beautiful, dear man touched the lives of so many in positive ways. The world needs more people like David Snow. Sail away till we all meet again as the music plays on, my friend.

David was one of the kindest, most talented and compelling people I ever met. He hired me 33 years ago and I learned so much from him, and loved our work together on many writing projects. He was a great mentor; when I asked him to let me take on a huge creative project that had long been handled by an outside vendor, he gave me a chance to prove myself, then gave me the assignment. He had a knack with words, as well as with people; a plethora of fascinating stories; an abiding passion for the music, cuisine, characters and lore of Nola; and a heart of gold. Rest in peace, David. You were an inspiration and one of a kind.

Since 1985 I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with David.
From the production of the movie history of the steamboat Delta Queen to spending the next 37 years working with him on the Delta Queen, Mississippi Queen and the American Queen, it has been nothing but pleasure.
Just this past February, he sent me his latest book and I spoke with him by phone.
I will really miss his "Pop-Out' Christmas Cards and our brief calls.
David, enjoy what you always called a , "Do Dah" on the heavenly River Boat.

A lifetime of musical and nautical knowledge leaves with the passing of David Snow -- who by a few was also called The Snowman. Smile when I think of him costumed as a street sweeper, "sweet" sweeper on Carnival day. Also when he was behind the bar for the wake up call party on the second Saturday of Jazz Fest dispensing a concoction he called Mexican Breakfast. Great times at the Storyville District which he co-owned and sailing across the lake for the Wooden Boat Festival. Peace and love...

"Ahoy!!!" The twinkling mischievous blue eyes. His jaunty hats. Cocktail king. Writer. Sazerac maker (I have his recipe). Music aficionado. I´ve had the pleasure of living across the street from David for the last 2 or 3 years. He is one in a million. I will miss him.
