David was a true friend. A man of many gifts and talents who worked to make Louisiana stronger and more resilient. He was also kind and generous to others - including my family as we struggled to get back home post Katrina. May his memory be a blessing. To him girls, I miss y´all and you´re always in my thoughts and prayers.

Seems like yesterday, playing 1 on 1 basketball at David's boyhood home. Sweating, laughing, "let's play 1 more!" Has "new body now", laughing, playing & no sweat! Looking forward to our re-match!

David's greatest gift to the New Orleans community was his three amazing daughters, women of grace and integrity. They will bring honor to his memory all the days of their lives, reflecting the care and kindness their father brought to all his endeavors.

My condolences go out to David's family. As a member of the National World War Two Museum Board of Trustees, David was truly an inspiration to me. Last December, David didn't need to come to our meeting-but he got himself out of bed, brought all the medical equipment with him and actively engaged all of us in the meeting because the museum, and the city of New Orleans was so important to him. He easily could have taken a pass and no one would have blinked an eye. I am so sorry I didn't have longer to get to know him better. My prayers go out to his family and close friends, that I am sure feel holes in their hearts today. No doubt, I do.

David Voelker was a life saver and a man of amazing insights and compassion. He believed in the goodness of others. Years following the twin destruction of Hurricane Katrina and Rita, David spent countless hours defending the city of New Orleans before the powerful in Washington and wasted no time in lining up support in Baton Rouge. To David's friends and family, he will be missed. Too his many fans and admirers, we will keep his legacy alive. I love you David Voelker. Yes we can!
