I was not surprised by the number of people that attended the service to wish Dean farewell. He touched people in many different ways.

Phyllis and I have been close friends since childhood and close friends as married couples. I remember double dating with Phyllis and Dean when they first met. What always touched me the most was Dean's generous nature. He would have given you the shirt off his back if asked. He never forgot a friend and his friends will never forget him.
He was a fighter through many obstacles and always came out on top. He fought this cancer like a tiger, but lost the battle. He never gave up - his body gave out but not his spirit or sense of humor.

Dean will always be in our hearts. Phyllis and Dean showed us the face of courage and strength when it matters most.

Sadly missed by Madalyn and Fred Shear

Phyllis & Family......
We are so, so saddened to hear of Dean's passing. Dean was everyone's friend. When you were in the presence of his endearing smile & warm charm you felt as important to him as any friend he'd ever had. He was a special soul and that absence will leave a void in the lives of all he was in contact with and, of course, a deep hole in the hearts of his remarkable family.
We are so sorry that we are away from New Orleans & unable to personally attend his services. We have kept all of you in our thoughts & prayers.
Susan & I sincerely express our deepest condolences to each of you. May Dean's memory be for a blessing.

Dear Phyllis, When I heard of Dean's passing I was walking back from a small lake in the woods... (Cell phones). I decided one more cast in honor of Dean who was both smart and lucky. I can not tell you how often I lost to Dean playing gin. As for my cast, the line ripped out but whatever it was escaped. Darn. Like Dean, life remains a mystery to me. When I returned home I told my wife, Chris, about Dean's passing. She recalled meeting him at our reception in New Orleans. Her impression, like so many others, is that he was a sweet natured man. And I must agree with her when she said that she felt so glad that in boyhood I knew him as a dear friend.
