To the family of Lance Cpl. Dean D. Opicka:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.

Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Respectfully,

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Opicka Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Dean, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

My deepest and most sincere condolences to the family of Dean Opicka. Memories of Dean continue to flood my mind as I reflect on his short but successful life. The pain in my heart is still there, that a man as great as he, was taken too soon. I am proud that I was a part of Dean's life. I am proud of Dean for giving that life for us. It only proves the fact that Dean was the most geniune, sincere, and loyal friend anyone could wish for. His humor, his smile, his voice, his drive, his passion, his excitement. This man truely enjoyed his life and made the most of it. To quote my husband as we walked away from the visitation, "I wish I could be half the man he was". Remembering Dean helps me to remember what life is all about. Dean makes me remember to not take things for granted, appreciate those around me, and live my life as best I can because that is Dean, that is what he did, that is what he believed in.
My prayers continue for all of you. I was amazed at how strong all of you were these last two weeks because of how proud you were of Dean. But I know there will be times when you are alone and you can not help but feel sad that you have lost this amazing son, brother...and at that moment, I pray that God will wrap his arms around you, hold you close, and you will feel a soft breeze on your face as Dean whispers " I love you".

April 28, 2008

I'm not sure where to even start. I have so many memories of Deano and all the good times we had. And as the days go bye more and more memories seem to pop up every day. Dean was one of my very good friends in high school and through the years we were able to keep in touch. He was the type of guy you could talk to about anything and everything. He was always encouraging and was willing to help you with any problem you were having. Dean was that person that always put other people before himself and was always willing and even eager to help others out. I have many memories of him that will be with me forever. I had the privilege of playing many sports with him. He was a great athlete and competitor who had many talents. But as we all know, Dean was much more than just an athlete; he was an exceptional individual with outstanding personality and character. With all of the sports memories I have of Dean, the memories that mean the most to me are those memories shared hanging out, playing cards, bowling, going up-north, and just having fun. With everything that is going on in the world today and the seemingly decline in moral values, Dean is that role model more people should try to be like. Even though Dean was 5'10" tall and I am 6'5", I always looked up to Dean and will forever look up to him for the way he lived his life. Dean's family can be very proud of the son/brother they helped to raise. They are in my thoughts and prayers. I thank God for allowing me the opportunity to have know Dean, even if it was for what seems to be a way too short amount of time. But I know we cannot be selfish and we need to let Dean make many more people smile in heaven. I miss you Deano, but I know one day I will see you again. Until then I will always remember you and how you could make anyone smile under any circumstance.

GOD BLESS!!

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

I have a marine in the 2/24 and we both wanted to send you our deepest sympathies for the loss of Dean. Please do not hesitate to let me know if there is anything that I might do. My marine knew Dean and spoke of him with great respect. We have worriors and angels and now we are protected by both.

Words cannot explain how deeply sorry I am for your loss. I know firsthand that nothing I can say ease the sorrow that your family undoubtedly feels. Hearing of Dean's death brought me back to the darkest day of my own life and since then there has rarely been a moment that Dean's family and friends have not been on my mind. Know that there are many of us nearby who know your pain and are thinking about and praying for you each and every day.

My deepest condolences to the entire Opicka family. I'll forever remember Deano's huge smile. He was an under-classman that everyone knew & liked. He will be missed by many. He had a passion for life & it reflected in everyone he knew & met. Deano - you're one of the nicest people I've ever met & became friends with. You have touched so many lives. May you rest in peace, you truly are home.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I never had the honor of meeting Dean but, I do know some of his cousins. They have told me what a great guy he was and I can tell he will be greatly missed.

He Went Away, But Never Again

He went away, it seems so long ago.
We waited so patiently for his return,
And hoped it would be soon.
It turned out to be sooner then we expected,
And not the way we hoped.
He is gone now and will never come back,
Not physically anyways.
You must remember he will always be here,
His is in out hearts, mind and soul.
So no matter how much we miss him,
No matter how much it hurts,
Just remember:
He is in our hearts,
He is in our mind,
And he is in our soul,
And he will never have to leave again.

Our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of LCpl Dean Opicka during this tragic time. We know first hand how it feels as we lost our 19 year old LCpl Nicklas Palmer on December 16, 2006 while patroling the streets of Fallujah as the gunner of a humvee. The days do get easier to meet but we still have those difficult moments within the days. Don't let anyone tell you at any point in time where you and your emotions should be, you will be just where you need to be at whatever point in time it is. If you have not noticed or began to experienced it, you are now part of the Marine Corps family, and they truly mean it. If you ever need anything from any one of them, just let them know and they will be there for you. Please know how horrible we feel for your loss, he is a Hero and will always be remembered. He and you gave the ultimate sacrafice of his life and we honor that! May the love of our Lord be with you, guide you and hold you during your healing journey. With much love and respect...Brad and Rachele Palmer, Gold Star Parents-USMC...Semper Fi

I knew Dean from my days of school since the 7th grade. Even before with some of the sports like Little League where I was always nervous if he was pitching against us! I could not possibly write all the things to describe Dean and the good times we had together. The sports, plays, classes, card games or just hanging around. He was so well liked by everyone because he treated everyone the same and with such great respect! One story that shows the type of person he was is he broke his arm in lunch one time when we were dunking off of the bleachers at lunch. He couldn't play for the team for awhile but wanted to play so bad for a tournament that we had. So he wrapped his cast up, ok'd it with the officials and away he went. None the less this was his shooting arm also! Goes to show what type of person and competitor he was! I could go on forever and ever with these stories to look back on your times and I will be so thankful that I got to know a great person like you! I will miss you so much my dear friend and remember back on all the countless times that we had together through school! I know you are looking over us all! God bless!

April 23, 2008

May God bless the Opicka Family and all of those who knew him. I was fortunate to know Dean on a personal and professional level. We had some unforgetable times together. Unfortunately our lives took us in very different directions.
Dean was an amazing person with such a love for life and everyone in it.
With love, Dean you will be missed!

To the Opicka family:
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We know first hand how difficult this is now and how hard it will remain. We too lost a Marine in the 224 during their first deployment to Iraq in 2004. Our hearts sank when we saw that the unit lost two more incredibly brave young men. May your love for Dean, and memories of his love for you, guide your family through the incredibly tough times ahead. God be with you.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of LCpl Opicka. Although he is gone from your sight, his memory remains everywhere. It is our hope that your memories will ease your pain. It seems not enough to thank him for his sevice as he gave the ultimate sacrifice. As parents to a Marine who served two tours, we know our pride, our fears, and we know our children were doing what they felt they must do. Dean now stands guard at Heaven's Gate. May God Bless Your Family.

My sincere condolences go out to all of your family and friends. My 20 year old brother Lance Cpl. Dennis Veater also from the 2nd Marines, was killed March 09 2007 in the Al Anbar Province. I found that reading entries in his guest book gave me a since of comfort as I began coping with my loss. May I leave you with something I was told by a friend of mine. "Be thankful for the time you had with him and rest assure knowing you will get to see him again, in a better place. Heaven knows no time." "I would rather have 20 years with him than an eternity with anyone else." I know this doesn't heal the pain you feel but your Marine is a hero and will always be watching over you.

I can't even find the words...I lost my 19 year old son--5 Sept 2007, Balad, Iraq. I am absolutely devastated and I know that you are too...but find comfort in the fact that we will see our loved ones, our heroes again. Do I wish that I could trade places with my son? ABSOLUTELY not. He is in the arms of our Lord--"And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away" ~Rev 21:4

I have been blessed to have had Dean as a friend since 3rd grade. And although all the newspapers remember him as the football quarterback, the basketball point guard, and the record holding baseball pitcher, I think those of us who knew him well remember him in a different way. Picture the person you know with the biggest, warmest heart...add a huge smile...and then think of something hilarious...that is what it's like to remember Dean. Dean was sunshine.

I met Dean at Carroll College. At the time, he had become close friends with one of my sorority sisters; they were both volunteering with an organization for handicapped children. Dean was always happy. He was the first to laugh (even at himself), the first to cheer you with a joke, and as incredibly popular as he was, he never realized it. He had time for everyone. Just knowing Dean-O made my world a better place, and I feel blessed to have called him friend. He could light up a room with his thousand watt smile. He was easygoing and just a joy to know. I had not seen Dean in several years, but whenever I thought of him he could still make me smile. For those of you who were closer, I know your pain is unimaginable. Losing someone like Dean is unthinkable. I pray for you; not to forget, but for the hurt to lessen. May God bless and keep you.

My regrets go out to the Opicka family. I was introduced to Dean 5 years ago by his close friend, Jody. Every year since then, we have played softball together. Before I parted for Ireland in late July 2007, I shook his hand and wished him the best on his tour of duty. I didn't think it would be the last time we spoke.
I say with genuine certainty that Dean was one of the nicest people that I have ever had the privilege of knowing and befriending. I am grateful that I was able to share a friendship with him for a short time. He was a great person and a great teammate. He will be deeply missed. Rest in peace Dean, and God bless you.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I would also like to tell you about a website, http://groups.msn.com/SSPSoldierPor

where some wonderful people will make wood portraits of your fallen Hero for free for the immediate family. I became aware of this site when I wanted to do something special for Le Ron’s mother.

April 16, 2008

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
