Fred Martin Obituary

Mr. Fred Martin, Jr., "Sonny", as he was affectionately known by his family, was born February 16, 1949 to the late Fred and Josephine Martin in the city of New Orleans, LA. At a young age, he became a member of Bethel Reform Methodist Church under the leadership of Rev. Peter S. Atkins, who months later christened him as his Godson. "Sonny" attended school at Covington Rosenwald under the guidance of Professor Harrison and Principal Alphonse Fabre. At Seventeen, he went on to further his education at Job Corp U.S.A. in San Antonio, TX where he became certified as a body and fender repairman. Although Job Corp provided training and placement, the location was several states away from his family, so Sonny decided against it and instead found employment with A-Rocket Moving and Storage Company, where he remained for forty-plus years. He dedicated his life to the Word of God, was protective of family and friends and loved being in good company while enjoying great food. He departed this life on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at Slidell Memorial Hospital in Slidell, LA. In addition to his parents, Sonny is also preceded in death by his younger brother, Carl D. Martin and a great niece. He leaves to cherish loving memories, three sisters, Grace, Lillie Mae and Fran all of Covington, LA, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral. A Celebration service honoring the life of the late Mr. Fred "Sonny" Martin, Jr. will be held at Bethel Reform Methodist Church, 602 W. 29th Avenue, Covington, LA 70433 on Saturday, April 15th, 2023 at 11 am. Interment Wilson Cemetery #2, 1400 N. Columbia Street, Covington, LA. Visitation 10 am in the church. Due to Covid variants, Face mask and social distancing encouraged.
