My deepest sympathy to the Hero family. Your father/grandfather had an extremely interesting and faith filled life. You are in my prayers.

Here is how I knew George Hero: I had a desk in the lobby of the Whitney Bank. A stately but non-functioning grandfather clock stood near my work area as part of the lobby's decor. I started to notice a fellow - George, I later found out - visit the clock at random intervals when he came into the lobby, open its glass door, and tinker with its works. Then one day he went to the clock, wound it with its two keys, and nudged the pendulum into motion with his hand. The clock was fixed. After that, he would pause on his trips through the lobby every few days to wind the clock. The first time we spoke was when he approached me at my desk to inform me that he would be away for a time and would I keep the clock wound until he returned? Of course I said yes; having observed the time and effort he had devoted to restoring the clock's function, I could hardly refuse. He explained that the problem had been an issue with the clock's weights, but that the problem appeared to be solved now; and he showed me how to wind the mechanism. Until I left my job in the bank's lobby in 2012, I wound the clock when George wasn't there to do it.
I'm sorry not to have known George Hero better than I did. My impression of him is that he was a dedicated, kind, and unassuming man, who has left our corner of the world a better place for his having been here.

George, you were always a true friend and mentor. My success and life is due in a large part to your willingness to educate me in the forensic sciences. Thank you good friend for everything you did for me.

I worked for George for 42 years. He was a true gentleman with patience and a very kind heart. Remember the good times together as you celebrate his life.
In all of these years he was a true gentleman and never got angry at anyone.

George truly was so generous with his time and loved the city and its history deeply. It was an honor to work with him and Dannie on projects over the years.
