Grady Smith Obituary

SMITH Grady L. Smith, age 84, passed away on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at 12:00 PM in Ochsner Hospital after an extended battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Meredith Richardson Smith and father of Donald L. Smith, Julia Ann Kelsey, Mary Ann Staton, Sherry Lynn Staton, and Sandra Diane Kelly. He was grandfather of Celeste Brasher, Christopher Staton, Jayne Bertrand, Jason Johnson, Isaac Kelly, Richard Kelsey, Brian Smith, David Smith and Natalie Gordon, and great-grandfather of Corey Bertrand, Paige Bertrand, Emma Bertrand, and Ethan Brasher. He is also survived by three sisters, Nettie Hollines, Mary Ann Holland, and Emma Lou Brashier. He was preceded in death by Morris, Jasper, Harry, Elliot, Thomas J. and Robert Bruce. Mr. Smith was a native of Decatur, Ms. After graduation from NCAHS at Decatur, Ms., he served in the U.S. Navy during WWII on Navy Vessel LST 1032 as a S1C in two major battles (Iwo Jima and Okinawa). After WWII he attended Mississippi State College and received his BS degree in Education as a teacher and worked as assistant principal for 6 years in public schools in Ms. Then he and his wife and children moved to River Ridge, La. and resided there. He was employed by American Cyanamid Co. (now Cytec) and worked as a Lab Tech and training supervisor until retirement in 1986. He is a member of Riverside Baptist Church. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral services at L.A. Muhleisen and Son Funeral Home, 2607 Williams Blvd, Kenner, La. 504-466-8577 on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. Visitation on Monday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. until time of service. Burial to follow in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, 11316 River Road, St. Rose, La. 70087.
