Harold Neitzschman Obituary

Dr. Harold R. Neitzschman, Jr., MD, passed away at his home on Monday, March 7, 2016, after a valiant battle with brain cancer. He was 75 years old. Dr. Neitzschman was a graduate of the first class of the University of New Orleans and a graduate of LSU Medical School in 1965. He completed residencies in Pediatrics and Radiology and later, a fellowship in Nuclear Medicine. Dr. Neitzschman was Board Certified and Fellowed in Pediatrics, Radiology and Nuclear Medicine and held memberships in those academies. Dr. Neitzschman practiced for 22 years on the Westbank at Jo Ellen Smith and Meadowcrest hospitals, and was selected by National Medical Enterprises to sit on its National Advisory Board. Leaving private practice, he joined the faculty at LSU Medical School as Director of the Musculo-Skeletal Section. Since 2000, Dr. Neitzschman served at Tulane University School of Medicine, the last 11 years as Chair of the Department of Radiology. Being a member of the Tulane Medical community and teaching future radiologists was his passion and his professional fulfillment. Over the course of his medical career, he lectured extensively and authored over 150 articles in professional journals. He later sat on the Radiology and Physics Advisory Board for Hospital Corporation of America. Dr. Neitzschman was a life-long resident of New Orleans and embraced fully all the city had to offer - art, music, food - especially during his time as a French Quarter resident. A man of great humor and generous spirit, he enjoyed life to its fullest, always in the company of his beloved wife of over 50 years, Lynne Heckmann Neitzschman, PhD. Inspired by the culture around him, as well as those he encountered in his travels, he began painting, something he pursued avidly for years. In addition to traveling, he enjoyed golfing with Lynne and spending as much time as possible with dear friends and family. In addition to his wife, Dr. Neitzschman is survived by his son, Hal Neitzschman, MD, and his wife Deneen and their children Layne, Davis, Hale and Banks; his daughter, Robyn Neitzschman, MPH, and his sister, Cynthia Neitzschman Albert and her family. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Saturday, March 12, 2016, beginning at 9 am followed by a Catholic Mass at noon at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Interment will follow in Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the "Dr. Harold Neitzschman Memorial Fund for Tulane Department of Radiology." This fund will help to enhance faculty and resident education. Donations can be mailed to Department of Radiology, Tulane School of Medicine, c/o Merisa Pasternak, Office of the Dean, 1430 Tulane Avenue, #8001, New Orleans, La. 70112. Popadaoc was a great grandfather to all of his grandchildren. He affected all of our lives tremendously and I think we can all agree about that. We all loved him very much including me. He died peacefully and now is safe in God's hands. Love you Popadoc!!

My father was the greatest dad a boy could have. Always finding out what issues were bothering me at the time, and providing great advice. Harold was never too busy for his son. After a long days work at the hospital, he was always ready to shoot baskets or throw the football. Often times we would play scrabble or video games late into the night. During the years that I trained to be a physician, dad taught me so much just being who he was. Watching him interact with patients and their families, as well as other physicians taught me so much about how a doctor should act and affect so many peoples' lives. Harold was the best man at my wedding and was so important in my family life.
I didn't realize it at the time, but all those years as a young boy he was showing me how to be a father myself. I'd like to think he would be proud of the father and physician that I have become. I miss him more than I can express.
Dad was truly a great man, and I loved him dearly.

Dr. Neitzschman was a man who truly loved all that life had to offer him. However it was through stories from his sweet daughter and beloved wife that I knew him best. Both of them lit up whenever they spoke of Dr. Neitzschman. He was a lucky man to be as loved by them. I am truly honored that I had a chance to know him.

Dear Lynne, Robyn and family,
Sam and I unfortunately only got to know Harold better shortly before his illness. But, in that time we could clearly see what a kind and very special person he was. The many very beautiful tributes to him and his many accomplishments mentioned during the Mass helped us to know him as the amazing family man and professional that he was. May the many beautiful memories that you have, help to heal in this time of grief. You are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Dr. Neitzschman,

You are a joy to everyone who knew you. Thank you for being an amazing father, grandfather, husband, doctor, teacher, friend to the so many who love you. Thank you most of all for being my friend Robyn's dad. She is an incredible woman and friend! You are truly missed and loved.

My dearest Uncle Harold,
Your light has shown so brightly in my life that I failed to realize this until after you were gone. I mourn your passing every day but I also have faith that you are now where you need to be. I will miss talking to you about Mel Brooks films. I will miss your love of technology. I will miss your wit and your love of fine clothing. I will miss your quiet demeanor . I will see you again.

My sweet dad,

I love you.

I love who you are, how you live, how you love and create the moment, reflect, imagine, give and show generosity, laugh, share, humble yourself, cope with threatening life challenges, respect and value others, and frame living. You always told us that what you admired most about people was the quality of the positive impact they had on others. Do you know the amount of impact YOU had on others or your family, you big heart? Thank you for giving me life and the model of learning from someone so sincere and authentic. Your are profound, life-loving, committed, ingenious, quirky, loveable, light-hearted, artistic, and musical (you mastered the Saints theme song on the theremin, played the Hapi drum because you could always sound like a maestro on it, and always burst out singing in perfect pitch the songs from Yentl or Sondheim musicals). Thank you for capturing the now through teaching moments ("aunt minnies", "the takeaways" on youtube, conversations). Thank you for having the foresight to capture the past, present and future in your photography, for approaching challenges with humor, for teaching me persistence and love, for modeling wisdom, friendship, humanity.

It was a privilege to be your daughter and to have had the gift "to live" you. In any lifetime, my sweet Dad.

My brother, Harold, fought until the end and never complained to me. When I would ask how he was doing he would say he was having no pain and he was ok. I must say we have always had a great brother/sister relationship. I loved and always will love him and I know he felt the same way about me. God bless my wonderful brother. As I always say no one can take our memories away. We both had great childhoods with very loving, caring parents.
Thank you Lord!!

Harold was a giving father-in-law to me, a wonderful example as a husband and father to my husband, and an awesome grandfather to my 4 children. I miss his spirit and his jokes and only derive comfort in his passing by knowing that he no longer suffers. I know he is aware that we think of him daily and that his life has impacted us all greatly. I miss him every day and our family continues to keep him alive by talking about him and sharing his stories. Additionally, our home is a tribute to his love of art as many of his own paintings are here for us to enjoy. No one can replace you Harold! I'm just happy that I was a part of your life.

Popadoc was a great grandfather who never got angry. I remember watching SNL with him when we would come to his house. He also was one of the inspirations in my love of political events. I also remember about how he taught me many life lessons and came with us many times to travel. He will be greatly missed but I will also be happy that he is in peace.

Anyone that had the pleasure of knowing my grandfather was truly blessed. My pop a doc was very lively and fun to be around. He loved the saints, eating the best food, and collecting exquisite and funky art pieces. I experienced some great times with friends and family staying with Pop a doc and Lyn Lyn in the French Quarter. He would always say his famous line when we would visit, "This ain't Covington!!" I was very fortunate to go on many vacations with my grandparents, the world travelers. Pop a doc was quite the sport as we spent hours in the American Girl Store in Chicago. I loved watching SNL with him while sipping on his famous blood Mary's. His joy and success in his career has inspired me on the path of becoming a physician. He was always interested in what was going on in my life and would give great advice. Pop a doc lived his life making me feel special and he will be missed greatly.

Davis Neitzschman

April 5, 2016

Popadoc was about as kind and loving as a grandparent could be. Never quick to anger, I don't believe he ever scolded me or reprimanded me even when I may have deserved it. We enjoyed each other's company, and bonded over things we both loved: food, classic old funny movies; and most importantly, football. Pop would bring me to Saints games every Sunday whenever I wanted to go and instilled in me a certain optimism one needed in order to endure some of the less impressive seasons. When I think of Pop, I am reminded of his jovial personality and the way that he loved life so strongly, that will never change. Wherever and whatever heaven is, there is no doubt in my mind that he is there.

Dad, these were some of the general intentions shared on March 12:

-For all those suffering from life-threatening illnesses, particularly brain cancer.

-For those in training to be physicians, that they strive to be medical guardians of the whole patient.

-For all families that they may enjoy the same love and appreciation that my Dad, Harold, had for his.

-That we may always be able to live in the moment and declare, as my dad, Harold, did with sincerity, I'm so happy to be here!

-That we may always value reflection and challenge ourselves to answer Dad's question each day, what made today special?

-For all of us committed to others, that we may find enrichment through our relationships.

-That we may find joy, humor, and laughter in our lives and endeavor to share it with others.

-That we may find happiness in the simple things in life. For those of you who knew my Dad, it might be in just wearing a pair of really colorful socks.

-That we may each strive to do our best while remaining humble and authentic.

" Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."

March 17, 2016

Harold had full rich life. He loved his wife, Lynne, for 52 years and his life became richer with the births of his children, Hal and Robyn, and his 4 grandchildren. Harold had an amazingly successful career as a doctor and becoming chair of Radiology at Tulane. But that is not the sum total of Harold. Harold constantly challenged himself to expand his vision. Always wanting to learn more. Another residency, an artist, photographer, he tried the piano and the bongos. Harold loved Tulane and teaching his residents. He experienced adventure traveling with family and friends and he was a joy. He would research where to go, what to do, and what to eat.
Harold was happy, successful, admired and loved by many, never jealous or boastful. He walked in his own shoes and he had many of those! His is a life to be celebrated. I am privileged to be a part of his life.
As always,
Toni

Lynne, my daughter Olivia and I will never forget your hospitality during our visit to New Orleans when she interviewed at Tulane Medical School. I greatly respected Harold for his many career-long contributions to radiology and, in particular, nuclear radiology. My most heartfelt condolences, Liz Oates

Lynne,
Kathy and I join our prayers with yours for Harold's happy entry in to the loving embrace of God. May you be comforted by the colorful and vivid memories you two created for all of us to admire and enjoy. Together, yours was the fulfillment of "two becoming one" in spirit, in laughter, and in love. May goodness continue to follow you as you stay wrapped in the warmth of Harold's memory, his love for life, and his devotion to you. God bless.

"Death is nothing at all. It does not count. I have only slipped away into the next room. Nothing has happened. Everything remains exactly as it was. I am I, and you are you, and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged. Whatever we were to each other, that we are still. Call me by the old familiar name. Speak of me in the easy way in which you always used. Put no difference into your tone. Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without an effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was. There is absolute and unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just round the corner. All is well."
