Horace "H" Smith Howell
Born in Pocatello, Idaho, June 21, 1923 - Died in Sun City, Arizona, January 17, 2015
H was the only child of Horace Robert Howell and Arvilla Woolley. He was raised in Pocatello, Idaho graduating from Pocatello High School in 1940 and received his B.S. degree from Northwestern University, School of Commerce where he was President of his fraternity, Phi Kappa Psi; and Vice-President of Interfraternity Council.
He served in the U.S. Army and spent World War II in Africa and Italy with the 3rd Infantry Division. After the war he started working in Chicago with Continental Bank and then returned to Pocatello.
After opening an investment office in 1947, he was later a partner in a New York Stock Exchange firm, and spent 50 years in the business. He continued to follow the Stock Market until the last few months of his life.
He also was a guest lecturer at Idaho State University for several years. And a long-time Bengal Athletics Booster.
He served as Chairman of United Fund, President of the Pocatello Country Club, member of the Pocatello Chiefs, Rotary, Elks, and was appointed to the first Idaho Investment Board. He was a member of the Alta Club in Salt Lake City, Utah and Union Hills Country Club in Arizona.
He enjoyed playing golf and tennis, fishing, hunting, training dogs, and photography. He was an aficionado of fine Scotch and Malbec. He created and was President and CEO of S.P.U.D., Society for the Prevention of Unhealthy Diets.
He married Mary Lou Fechtel on December 30, 1959. He is survived by his wife, daughter Julie Ann Howell, grandchildren Andrew Roberts, Sam Roberts and Hannah Roberts. He is also survived by, as H put it, "his instant family," George Rhoads (Gwen), Jeffrey Rhoads (Jennifer), Marcia Rhoads Lowry (widow of Douglas) and grandchildren Chris Rhoads, Jennifer Lowry, Melanie Lowry and Timothy Lowry.
Join his family for a memorial gathering the afternoon of June 20th, at the Juniper Hills Country Club.
