Huey P.L. Fassbender Obituary

Huey Fassbender III had recently "found peace" through his faith, his father said. "He was a model son, a model soldier, my best buddy," Huey Fassbender Jr. said. The younger Fassbender, 24, of LaPlace, La., died Jan. 6 when a roadside bomb exploded in northwest Baghdad. He was based in Lafayette, La. Fassbender graduated from a Christian high school, where he was a wrestler. "He was just a real personable person. He was just a giving person," his father said. He enlisted in the Army after high school and served in Afghanistan before leaving in 2003. He enlisted the National Guard the following year. While not on duty he worked as a waiter and split time between his father's home and that of his mother, Sandra Norra. Fassbender said his son looked at Iraq almost as if it was his calling. His son told him that finally being able to use his training in Iraq was like playing "in the Super Bowl."

Hello,

We apologize for being so late in expressing our deepest condolences to you and your family. We want you to know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this holiday season and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo, service branch, rank and hometown of Huey P.L. Fassbender US Army Specialist.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families, friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

Huey and I served together in Saudi Arabia 2001-2002. He had a warriors heart, and was quick with a joke. We laughed together....a lot. I left the Army in 2002 after that tour of duty. A few years later I read in the Army times that he had been killed in action. I spoke with my wife about how Huey's death made me realize I had gotten out too early. I went in the Army reserves that year, then made the jump back to active duty. I've been back on active duty since 2007, making every day count, and forever grateful for having known an amazing Soldier named Huey Fassbender who made me realize what a privilege it is to serve in our Nation's Army.

Huey I can only think of the times we spill the blood in the same mud together. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about you and everything you and I accomplished. Battle buddies in basic training and close friends at our first duty station. I still have pictures of a lot of things but one in particular was the one of you and I together flexing for the camera backin basic. Man the tines we had. It was an honor for me, to not only know you but to have you as one of my best friends. My only regret is that I have never been down to see your resting place, because honestly I'm crying just writing this. " Their is no great sacrifice in War than that of our greatest of any sacrifice, the life of an American soldier. 814-969-4028 for anyone wanting to five me the info I need to finish this and bring myself some closer I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks again.

Huey,

I always think of you. I just recently returned from Alaska, and everywhere I turned, you were there. You were the one, who during the most unpleasant times, was always smiling and encouraging others. Whether -40 degrees or days without sleep, you were always pressing on.... We will always be Buffalos, "Truth and Courage."

Huey and I were friends when I was a little girl living in the Sugarmill Apartments in Kenner. He would come by my house and play with me, annoy my older brother and question EVERYTING my Mom did.(lol) Now mind you I was a chubby and little black girl and he was a crazy little white boy and he was my best friend at the time. (He was my Bud) We were the oddest sight. We would walk around that apartment complex getting into all kinds of stuff. Chasing ducks, making forts, and secret bases. He would stand up for me when people talked about me. I will never forget when I moved away he was right there as we were packing my stuff. He questioned everything! He was like that, so bright. lol And as I drove away he was right there waving goodbye. I'll never forget where I was when I saw his picture come up on the tv screen and I saw that he had died for our country. I broke down. I always wondered what happened to him. He was buried on my birthday. He was apart of a great time in my life and I am proud to have known him. I still remember him till this day. And I will NEVER forget him. God Bless the entire family. He was my buddy.

Huey,

It is still so, so sad for our family. It seems like just yesturday that you were teaching me how to enjoy life. You use to raise your glass (even at 8) and say "cheers" and make me laugh. You loved to toast. I toast you (in my mind) everyday and there is not a day that goes by that I do not think of you.

You are such a beautiful angel that will never be forgotten. I miss you more and more each day.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I had the honor of serving with "Fassbender" up in Alaska, but best of all I had the honor of calling him a friend. When push came to shove you could always depend on him being there. We went through some, what we thought, rough times, but he was always there. I was proud to have him in my company. Huey will be missed, to say the least, but he will be remembered as a hero who gave the ultimate price for what he believed.

To his family, my condolence, but I know you are proud of him. He was a great person and a great friend. He will be missed.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

My dearest Huey where do I begin. This past year has gone by so fast and it seems like just yesterday we were talking about you getting leave and making plans for when you got home. How my heart aches for you. I have tried to keep a positive attitude and a smile on my face all for you because I know in my heart it is what you would want. The last time we spoke was on New Years Eve day and you said to me that my year would be good and I have been waiting for it to get better. I have been strong and it's my memories and thoughts of you that have gotten me through thus far. In my heart of hearts I know you are in heaven watching over me and keeping me safe. Dear Huey,

It has been a long time since high school! Tyrice "House" and I were very sad to hear that you had passed on, but we are very proud of you! As sad as it is, I know that you are in a far better place. I will always remember you standing in the back of band class, and making fun of us wrestling cheerleaders at meets! Love you Huey! My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Dear Huey,

I knew you for a year in highschool. You were my favorite person in my R.O.T.C. class that year. Your smile was contagious. Your laugh came so easily. I am not surprised that you joined the military. You seemed to be a born leader. I am proud that I could call you my friend for a short while. My prayers to your family. No words could ever express the grief I know they are feeling now, but I know you are waiting with God.

Huey: I miss you so much sometimes the pain I feel in my heart is unbearable. I find myself rereading your letters hoping to find comfort in your words and I do. I am reminded of how much you truly cared for me. Never in my life have I known someone so kind, understanding, and big hearted as you. I am the one who is proud to say that I got to be with you even if it was for a short period of time. Just as you thought of me I too thought of you and still do. Thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of your life as well. I will never forget you and the joy that you brought into my life. I wrote to you that I believed that we would have our time and I still believe that with everything inside of me. I didn't get the chance to tell you but know that I love you very much.

To Huey: It is Mardi Gras 2005 and you were scheduled to come home for a few days on this Mardi Gras, I talked with you on Christmas Eve and you had asked that I keep it a secret, so you could suprise the family! You loved walking into your grandmother's home with your Dress Uniform on to suprise her as you did so many times before. You wore your Uniform so proudly. I remember the times you stood in my living room iorning your uniform, and battle fatigues before drill. It did not make sense to me then, but I understand now! You were an American Soldier and you always wanted to be (squared)away, that's what you told me. You gave so much of youself in the short 24 years of your life, as it states in these entries. I know all SEVEN of you guys are enjoying the Love of God that surrounds you all! When we spoke on Christmas Eve, I told you, it made my Christmas (you laughed)then I told you, I loved you! (I'm not sure who needed it more that day, me or you) You are gone but will NEVER be forgotton. So, Happy Mardi Gras.......I'm sure you guys are enjoying it. (and take it easy on the New Yorker) Love, Uncle Shawn

Huey was a great person and my Hero. For the length of time that I knew Huey, we became really close friends. I believe he brought me closer to my faith and God. Huey made me a better person. He was always such a positive person who made you feel good about yourself. I just want to thank him and will miss him, just as everyone else. Huey will be in my prayers all the days of my life and as for you (all his friends and family). Huey made a difference in this world, and just remember its our turn. One last thing, just remember, The Bible says we will see him again! Its not goodbye, its i will see you later.
