J. Gathright Obituary

GATHRIGHT Dr. J. Byron Gathright, Jr. died on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Ochsner Medical Center after complications from a stroke. Beloved husband and best friend of Barbara Gathright. Wonderful father of John, Lin, Miles and Peter. Devoted brother of Margret Love. Loving grandfather of Avery, Lila, Ian, Ethan, Reese and Heidi. Caring uncle to a host of nieces and nephews. Born in Oxford, Ms. he attended Ole Miss and Northwestern University. After graduation from medical school, Byron moved to New Orleans in 1957 and made it his home. Here he began his residency in surgery on the Tulane Surgery Service at Charity Hospital. From there he went on to Ochsner Foundation Hospital as a fellow in Colon and Rectal Surgery. He continued on the staff at Ochsner for 37 years, serving as Chairman of the Department for 10 years as well as Associate Medical Director for 17 years. He was President of both the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery and The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. Byron loved the medical profession and devoted his life to helping people. He enjoyed traveling with Barbara and together they saw a great deal of the world, visiting many interesting and exotic places. Relaxing with family and friends at Navarre Beach, Fla., sailing, fishing and bird watching were some of his favorite ways to spend time. These times were particularly special when spent with his grandchildren who continually delighted him. Byron was a very caring, gentle and generous person who touched the lives of all who knew him. We are saddened by his loss, but will cherish him always in our loving memories. Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation and memorial at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchatrain Blvd. on Saturday, September 4, 2010 from 2:00 - 5:00pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Nature Conservancy, The Audubon Society or the charity of your choice. To view and sign the guest book, please visit www.lakelawnmetairie.com.

I remember Dr. Gathright well from my days of working in the recovery room at Ochsner in the early 60's. He was a gentleman always, and equally respected by his patients and the staff.

My sympathy to the family.

He was so very special. Goodness in the world has been reduced by
his leave taking. We all now have to try being better at it. Thank you, Byron, for showing us how.

I am onthe internet reading the Times-Picayune obituaries in my little town's library and am deeply and profoundly saddened by Byron's passing. He was truly a great neighbor ,a gentle man and a gentleman. He took heading up a large and interesting clan of children and grandchildren with such casual aplomb that I so much admired,as there was never a dull moment in the Walnut Street house and the most interesting and unique gathering place for friends of the kids growing up.Byron and Barbara always were so warm and caring and open and loving to all with their lives and this made everybody's life all that much richer who knew them and came in touch with them. They were always there and the door was open to those who showed up.They made your time their time and that is so hard to find in people whowere as active and as busy as they were.My heart goes out to you,Barbara at this difficult time and Ihope you find the peace and serenity of a life well lived with your soulmate and birthday twin.Someday, you'll be back side by side.Mybest to your wonderful children,John,Lin,Miles and Peter on this sad occasion and I know you all and your children will be a great comfort to your mother,as she sees Byron in all of you.I will be there with you in spirit Saturday and I will reflect upon what your husband and father meant to me through the years. What a terrific guy he was at all times!
MY LOVE TO YOU ALL ALWAYS AND I WILL TRY TO GET IN TOUCH WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT...~Denegre Martin~PEACE BE WITH YOU...
