James, It never gets easier with each passing year. You were a great leader, and amazing friend. I would not be where I am today had it not been for your guidance and leadership.

COL Sid Linver and I supported Capt Neil´s unit in Afghanistan through our Platoon´s Forward program. I worked directly with one of his senior NCOs, SFC Justin Zeller. I had communicated with James on several occasions and enjoyed his sense of humor and obvious affection for his troops. Justin was with him the day he died and Sid and I attended the services honoring him and others at Ft. Riley. All these years later his loss still brings tears to my eyes. Say his name every chance you get. Doing so assure that he will never be forgotten.

I had the distinct honor to serve with James. We went to OCS and IOBC together. I loved to hear his stories about his adventures in Alaska! He seemed to me to be one of the most self reliant and resilient individuals I ever met. He was a great man, exceptional officer, and will be missed! To his family: my deepest sympathy.

Dear Nehl family and friends,
I had the honor of commanding Delta Company/2-16 Infantry from Feb-Sept 1968 in Vietnam. I did not know CPT Nehl except by reputation from those serving with him last year. It is apparent he was a dedicated husband and father, a dedicated professional leader and respected by all. I'm proud the Delta/2-16 Vietnam Vets of my era when called on, stepped up to donate towards having the family travel to Ft Riley last month so he could be memorialized. We Delta Vietnam Vets of 1967-69 will hold out 22nd reunion Aug 1-3 and will remember and toast CPT Nehl as one of our fallen brothers. God bless the family and provide comfort and strength.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Nehl Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

To the family of CPT Nehl,
I had the incredibly distinct pleasure of serving as CPT Neil's medic in the Recon Platoon for 3-21 IN at Fort Wainwright. James probably had a bigger impact on my life than any single person I have ever met. He taught me what it meant to be a good Soldier and a good man. I looked to him like the big brother that I never had and loved him more than anyone other than my son. CPT Nehl was a stabilizing influence and guiding light when I felt lost and confused. His death has impacted me in profound ways that I could not begin to imagine. I am so incredibly, deeply sorry for your loss and no words of mine can possibly ease this ache and pain you must be feeling. I only hope that the cherished memories of better times and happier days will ease his passing. God bless you all and, thank you, for sharing James with the rest of us if only for a while.

Dear Family of James D. Nehl, There are no words at this time that can ease your pain, I know, but please accept my heartfelt sympathy for your loss of a hero, Capt. Nehl, and my eternal gratitude for his service and sacrifice. A quote came to mind that went something like this. “There is terrible suffering in our world today. Tragic things happen to good people. God does not cause them, nor does He always prevent them. He does, however, strengthen us and bless us with His peace." May your family find peace in your hearts and comfort in your souls at this time.

I know there are no words to say at this time, except how sorry that I am. My thoughts and prayers are with you always. James will never be forgotten.
For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I'm home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I'm only a civilian
And I don't even know if it's allowed
But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.
For those missing in action;
for those who didn't make it home.
I know you're in God's presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.
I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you .
I Salute You.

To the Nehl family. Very sad to have heard this news. I had the pleasure of working with him here in Alaska about 7 or 8 years ago when he was an NCO. When he decided he wanted to become an Officer I had no doubt he would be a great Officer. He was a caring leader and a man of his word. Please know that your family is in my prayers.
