I first met John when he and I were both students at Spring Hill College. I enjoyed attending Mass at the Brothers' chapel. He was friendly, smiled a lot and always a good story or two about a professor or a class we had both taken. Later, he moved to New Orleans and so did I. We had several mutual friends and we attended some of the same get-togethers. New Orleans is a food city for sure. One of my very favorite memories of John is the dinner we both attended to which he brought his mom's milky way pound cake. It was luscious to say the very least! Not long after that, John "delivered" his mom's recipe to me - hand written back in those days - with a sweet note from her wishing me good luck. It's no surprise I still have it. I last saw John during the summer 2011 at a get together in Bay St. Louis. Older, yes, but the same twinkle in his eyes and the same smile. Certainly and without question, we who knew John in the early days were better off for knowing him. I can only imagine how many individuals are much better off for having been his students. Rest now John.

I taught with John at Jesuit in the 1990s. He was an outstanding teacher and an even better man. May he rest in peace.

A man who truly found his vocation in teaching, and by the sheer grace of God was I blessed to find myself in his class as a Freshman in high school. Having missed a week of classes, out with the flu or some such malady, I was totally lost (thanks to dear Pattie (Slattery) Burke for that expression) and approached him in the Math department office with a great deal of trepidation. Despite my fears, he stopped what he was doing and took the time right then and there to figure out where my proverbial train had gone off the track, telling me to come back at a later appointed time during which he gingerly brought me back up to speed, all apparently just part of a day's work.
Godspeed, John Garst.
Requiescat in Pace.

Know of my thoughts and prayers at this most special time. John and I started teaching together in the early 1970 at St Stanislaus College. Good memories.
May his soul and the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.
