John Koontip, 67, of Stevensville passed away on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2022, at Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo, Mich.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph. Friends may visit with the family beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Cremation will follow the services.

John was born on Oct. 1, 1954, in Seno, Laos, to Ha and Luang (Khamvilay) Khounthikoumane.
John married Phaphone Phongoudom in Savannakhet, Laos, on Sept. 9, 1977.
In 1980, John, his wife, and their young son came to the United States as refugees. They first moved to New Mexico, then later they came to St. Joseph. It was then that John earned his GED and attended Southwest Michigan College. After that, he worked in manufacturing, retiring in 2017 after 30 years.
In retirement, he spent a portion of each day walking to maintain his health. John cherished the time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
John is survived by his wife, Phaphone; his children: Thavone (Michelle) Khounthikoumane of Charlotte, N.C., Lyna (Karl) Krause of Oswego, Ill., Phasith (Courtney Olson) Khounthikoumane of Chicago; seven grandchildren; his brother, Sysuphanh (Thim) Khounthikoumane of Seno, Laos; his mother-in-law, Savay Sayavongsa of St. Joseph; and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Souphonh (Sudarat Aiemthuay) Phongoudom of St. Joseph.
He was preceded by his parents; two brothers, and a sister, in Laos.
