Jurgen Ristau Obituary

Jurgen Ristau passed away on Saturday, November 28, 2015, at the age of 74. Jurgen was affectionately known as "Coach" by the many who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bruno Ristau and Anita Cooley, and his brother John Cooley. He is survived by his brother Peter Ristau of Chicago, his nephews Peter Ristau, Jr., Michael Ristau, Erich Ristau, Martin Gaillot, Barry Gaillot, Kevin Gaillot, Scott Gaillot and Chris Cooley, his nieces Susan Dixon, Karen Ristau, Amy Ristau, Leslie Carbon and Tiffany Cooley-Ellis. Jurgen was a longtime teacher at Ecole Classique and a retired employee of the New Orleans Recreational Department. Jurgen coached baseball, basketball and football at St. Patrick playground, Commiskey playground, Norman playground and at St. Anthony of Padua where he touched the lives of many New Orleans youths. Jurgen enjoyed sharing his wealth of knowledge in Math, Science, Politics and Life in general with everyone he connected with. He enjoyed many rounds of Golf with his brother, Yogi, and many others. Although he never married, Jurgen was the "Father" to many of the youths in New Orleans through his many years of coaching and teaching. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Memorial Service on Saturday, December 12, 2015, at 1:00 pm at the Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4900 Airline Drive, Metairie, LA, and the visitation will begin at 10:00 am until service time. Jurgen was the finest of men. Dedicated to helping raise many of the New Orleans area youths, his mark is indelible. His example is one that is impossible to duplicate but also a shining example of humanity and kindness that we should all strive to follow. He is dearly missed by one of his old students that has had 50 years to appreciate how rare a soul he was. RIP Mr Ristau.

Marty, Barry, Scott, Kevin and Chris, I'm sorry to hear this. Jurgen was one of a rare few who was truly out there for the kids. I don't think we will every come across someone who will be as dedicated to NORD and the kids of Mid-City as Jurgen. He really deserves some special recognition by NORD. We lost a very good man.

The world has lost a great individual, who spent his life giving to the youths of the New Orleans area. Whether it was as a teacher or as a coach, Jurgen molded many of us into the people we have become today. You will be sadly missed by all of your family and friends. Rest in peace.

As the individual that first got me interested in sports, he taught me not only the value of how to play sports but also the value of how sports could and would influence my life from the importance of winning the games to how to handle adversity through each loss. His discussions and teachings allowed me to play on into college, so for all of that and the amount of other people that I know he affected, all I can say is THANK YOU. The city of New Orleans lost an Ambassador and I hope one day, the city would do something on his behalf to honor his work. Rest In Peace, you were a great man.
