Kermit Roux Obituary

Dr. Kermit ("Kim") Roux, Jr, a native of New Orleans and lifelong resident of the New Orleans area, born on March 18, 1941 passed away on Thursday, November 30, 2017. Loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kathryn Felt Roux, their two children Kermit L.("Tre") Roux, III (Margaret), and Kristin Roux Coman (Matthew), and their four grandchildren Elizabeth M. Coman, Molly M. Coman, Kermit L. ("Louis"), IV, and Henry H. Roux. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kermit L. Roux, Sr. and Elmire E. Roux. Kim graduated from Jesuit High School in 1958 and received his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in 1964. Following graduation from medical school, he completed a residency program in anesthesiology at the University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis where he met Kathryn. Upon returning to the New Orleans area in 1967, Kim practiced medicine at Charity Hospital before moving to East Jefferson General Hospital where he established its Department of Anesthesiology. Kim was also responsible for establishing the Department of Anesthesiology at Doctor's Hospital of Jefferson when it opened in 1971. He was consistently recognized by his colleagues for his knowledge, acumen, and work ethic. Kim was an avid outdoorsman and developed a passion for hunting and shooting at a very young age. As a member of the Louisiana National Guard, he served on the "Governor's Ten" shooting team that went to the National Championship. He also represented the Minnesota National Guard at the National Championship. As a competitive shotgun shooter, Kim competed against some of the best shooters in the country and world. Often with his son at his side, Kim travelled across the United States and indeed the world for competition. He was a lifetime member of the South Louisiana Gun Club and cherished the countless hours he spent there shooting and socializing with his son and friends. During hunting season, Kim often travelled across South Louisiana, Mexico, England, India and Russia seeking a variety game birds. In the latter part of his life, Kim discovered the simple joy, peace and serenity of time spent outdoors hiking, shooting and fishing with his children and grandchildren in Abita Springs. For Kim, these days were the most precious of all. The Roux family is grateful for the support they have received from family and friends, Kim's colleagues at Eye Care Associates and his loyal nurses of many years, especially Norbert Gaubert. They also wish to thank the kind gentle staff at Ochsner Hospital and Passages Hospice for their care throughout his illness. Memorial services will take place on Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home located at 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, Louisiana 70124. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will be followed with Mass at noon and burial at Metairie Cemetery. Dear Kathryn and family,
It was with great sadness that I learned this morning of Kim's passing. At my advanced age, that happens all too frequently. Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. It is at a time like this when you know how important it is to have each other to lean on and take comfort from to get through each day.
